About the First Amendment and the Boards

edited February 2002 in General Discussion
I have read several references to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution here, usually negative, stating that we (Admin and I) do not respect the First Amendment. That amendment has to do with free speech, free press, free worship, assembly, and redress. It states that, "Congress shall..." and places strict limits on what CONGRESS can do.Guess what folks? This ain't Congress! This is not a free-for-all forum, either. The space for this board is paid for by the owners of Gunbroker. In their wisdom, the owners have allowed me to moderate the board, pretty much as I see fit. I will continue to do so as long as the owners allow, or until I tire of it.I have visited other boards where vile, filthy language is the rule, where pornographic pictures are posted, where threats of * harm are hurled, and arguments abound, filled with vile insults.I am determined that this board will not deteriorate into such.I am not personally offended by bad language. I object to bad language because ANYONE can read any post on this board. Ditto for the insults, name-calling, etc. Just imagine the anti-gun liberals reading our posts and saying, "See what nasty, violent people they are."This is a MODERATED forum for the exchange of ideas and information. It is a public forum, but privately owned, so the First Amendment does not apply here.Thanks.

I hear ya screamin' Nunn. People that jump up and down about "free speech" here on GB should also recognize that communities have the powers to set their own standards for themselves. I once lived in a town that would not allow a movie theater or a liquor store to come to town. The college had their first dance the year I arrived. The town had given the college a loan to build the gymnasium. Until the gym was paid off--no dances. Dancing/liquor/theaters--all bastions of Satan and his minions. On a side note, we'd joke around about some of those community standards."Why is it against the rules to have sex standing up in such-and-such, IA?" Answer: It might lead to dancing.[This message has been edited by idsman75 (edited 02-02-2002).]

nunn, FWIW, I think you do an *outstanding* job moderating us rabble. I come here exactly *because* the PG rating & lid on personal attacks work to make it entertaining, informative and often a productive use of my time. And your analysis of our 'rights' here is exactly on point. Keep up the good work, please. THANK YOU!!With deep appreciation, Iconoclast

Nunn--Ditto. As long as a moderator has reasonable ideas about what to delete, I'm all for it. You seem to be a fair and square guy and I am pleased with the level of intelligence and wit of the comments we participate in on this board. The cliche about gun owners is that they're not smart -- this board dispells that myth quite nicely. Keep at it. Hasta la vista, party crashers.

I've asked this before. Didn't get an answer. Just curious. Who or what constitutes the ownership of this board? Anybody?

Nunn.. I think you do a good job. You are probably over paid though. lol .. I wish you werent so fast to poof threads as I would like to see what was said from time to time. But I have my reservations with you and people who say the statement that you made on the post above. "Just imagine the anti-gun liberals reading our posts an saying, "See what nasty, violent people they are," I find it hard for anyone to worry about what an anti-gun liberal would say, think or do. Period

In one of the problem classes I taught we had a sign on the blackboard" Cussing is the sign of a weak mind trying to express itself". Nothing more to say.

Keep in mind that that while the Constitution gives us the right to free speech it DOES NOT guarantee us a venue in which to express that freedom, other that the air space around us.

The constitution does NOT give us the right to free speech-it only guarantees that the existing right will not be be interfered with by congress.

Precisely. It's not a law about Congress, though it addresses Congress' non-relationship to the people's right. It's simply statement that Congress has no business regulating it. The key is that the right to property means you may not trespass to speak your piece on someone else's property if they choose not to let you. You can't put up billboards on some guy's yard. You can't relieve yourself in someone else's living room to make a point. You need to find a true "public forum," which Gunbroker/FortheHunt is not, thank goodness. I have always thought more web boards should realize this.Reminds me of a story: There was a weekly grass roots newspaper in L.A. called the L.A. Reader that seemed to print anything, whether submitted by mental cases, porno nuts, or intellectuals. I wrote them a letter, which they of course published, suggesting that if they were going to apply no editorial effort at all they might as well stay home in bed and get themselves "an infinite number of monkeys" to type their content. Always got a laugh out of that one.

You know, reminds of a conversation I once HAD to have with my daughter when she was still a teenager living at home. Conversation began about her "right" to go do something with some friends on a school night....free country..blah-blah..and ended with me letting her know within the confines of MY home that it was monarchy...not a democracy...and I was the KING,period........

Actually Nunn you don't have it quite right, but then again this board is a private forum where the owner, via the moderator, may determine appropriate expression. I think you do a great job, are a helpful and friendly guy and I appreciate your efoorts to keep it civil. Don't leave too soon.edit: efoorts are kind of like efforts but require more exercion.[This message has been edited by He Dog (edited 02-05-2002).]
