If you have ever taken a tetnis shot, please note the serum came from a horse. If you eat horse the shot will have little or no effect.
That is why horses are not eaten in America.

How many have them? Mine have been a pain. Last year we rode them only enough to let them know we were around. This year I've been working them a little harder. My 2 are doing pretty good. My brother in law keeps his half broke mustang here too. That one is onry. I was babying mine tonight and she (his)got jealous, tried to kick me, lucky I had a 12qt feed bucket in my hands, only knocked me back a couple feet, if I didn't have that bucket, whew! I'm beginning to think that 4 wheelers are the way to go, only feed'em when they need to go and they only buck when you put them in a bad spot. Horses on the other hand...........

My horses love their hats, it's the pants that piss them off.

My thought on horses is that where money is concerned, they are black holes.

If you have 'em, why hate 'em ?? Most folks who have horses should have a 4-wheeler instead. Horses are a year-round, "full-time occupation", and you get back what you put in. If you spend half as much time riding as you spend caring for 'em, don't own 'em.

One of the reasons I prefer Mules. They never try to get out. Even if they did they would come home come supper time. I have owned horses and mules all my life. Horses are dumb, Mules are smart.

When I was a kid my grandfather plowed with mules. At the end of the day he would turn them lose to go back to the barn. They would go right to the barn from out in one of the fields all by themselves.

It wasn't a hard decision. Do we stand here in the middle of this plowed up dirt baking in the sun, or do we trot back to that nice cool barn where there are buckets of sweetfeed and troughs of cool water? [:D][:D]

Reckon some folks simply don't understand why there are those of us that own horses still care for and love them. Different strokes folks.

I actually prefer to spend time with my horses rather than MOST people. That said I am recuperating from my wife's mare falling in a creek with my left leg and foot under her (still in the sturup). It was not her fault, just some slippery rocks. (Dodo occurs[;)]).
They cost us very little. Every three month a farrier and some yearly shoots (which I give them) and the yearly coggins test.[^]
They are very good 'therapy' for the madness in the world today![8D]

The Appy in my picture above spun me left when I was still finishing her training (she was spooked by the yippy dogs of the folks down the road). Right foot got hung up as I bailed left and the ole femur didn't take kindly to it. Not her fault, not my fault, just happened. That girl prances over to me every morning for her scratchin and pattin all the while nickering to beat the band [8D]

Likewise. We considered starting a horse rescue here but it would be far more work than I want to take on at this time in my live. Three of our four horse are rescue hoarse.[^]

Had at least one horse since I was 16 until I moved up here and went into business.
Got my first one at 14, but I had to stable him at a ranch for 2 years.

    I miss them a lot.[V]

Thank you Flying. There's another but he must have been camera shy that day. We have 4 and a darn mini donkey my wife HAD to have [:0] . I did equine rescue for a few years and we fostered as many as 8 at one time but that became hard to let them go on occassion so ended up adopting 2, was given the appy and so it goes. They keep me grounded and grateful and I'm blessed with their devotion. Horses aren't the smartest of critters but if you understand them and they you it all works out [:)]

    Appreciate the welcome

I miss owning horses!!! I would rathe rbe putting horses back in than doing most of what I do now. IF it had not been for the drought a couple years back, would still have horses but I gave them to a home whee they would not need water hauled, hay fed all year that year, and where kids would love them as I and my kids did.

I assume one of the 'bedrolls' are meant for the dog?[:0][;)]

Horses have been good to me. I have raced them, and vetted them for 50 years. They are work and need a lot of care, not always easy but I feel fortunate to have that experience.

Welcome MtnSpur, its always good to see horse folks on the forums.

We currently have 5. My oldest daughter trains horses and works in an equine therapy program for troubled youth.

Horses are a huge part of our life, they are alot of work, but we wouldnt have it any other way....[:)]

Hey Dennis, your paint is beautiful, is it registered?

Of course. Other wise my blue healer would take my bed roll and I would be SOL!! She has the "attitude" to do it too!!![B)]

Gelding isn't so bad unless one wants to breed. Our 3 boys are gelded and that "kinda" keeps em from going too nutz when the Appy is sprayin and prancin to tease. That mare flaunts it and knows the boys can't deliver the goods. Almost a comedy of errors[:o)] She's registered with the APHA though it's notdoing her or us any good [;)]
