Texas Deer Hunters

Yesterday afternoon, Sunday, I drove the Big Rig from San Antonio to Louisiana, going east on Interstate 10.

There was a parade of deer hunters on this interstate.
Every mile or so I was passed by a pickup truck with 4, or 8, hooves sticking out.
A minute later, here would come a pickup with a trailer, and the trailer would have 5 or 6 huge ice chests in it, and there, I could see an 8 point rack sticking out of the bed of the pickup.

There were at least 50 deer hunter guys who passed me on I 10.

I talked to a hunter at a gas station, just short of the Louisiana line. This guy had a trailer with 7 huge ice chests, all full of deer meat.
He said that he, and 3 buddies, had just hunted on Friday, Sat., and Sunday morning.
They had shot 9 does. They had to buy a Texas license, which cost $300 apiece. They were hunting on private property 100 miles nw of San Antonio. This guy said he used a 7mm mag.
I don't know if this was opening day, or what, but the hunters whacked some deer in Texas this weekend.

I'm seeing a lot in N. Texas since the cold front. I also see Game Wardens on bridges looking down into pickup trucks and pulling them over, later in the season.

Little over kill with that big rifle on Does in my opinion and how much meat was wasted where they hit them.

Must have been hunting on MLD properties, as gun season doesn't open until Nov. 3....

.....or they were all 16 and under.

I reckon there might be a few deer 100 miles NW of SA.

I've been down on the South Platte River-bottom the past 3 days, kickin' up White Tails left and right. I think I'll settle in and try to pop one tomorrow.

I can't believe how few hunters we had on Opening Day. We saw more today than Saturday or Sunday. Maybe the other locals were waiting for the City Slickers to thin out, too. Maybe the City Slickers went to the High Country this year... I hope so.

This Louisiana hunter told me that a private landowner up there nw of San Antonio had run an ad that he had too many does, and that was where he and his 3 buddies had gone to shoot the 9 does. He said the limit was 3 each, but they only got 9 total.

How can so many people be hunting deer in Texas if the season is not open?

Several years ago when my kids were in their bloodthirsty years, we drove into the checkstation in my crewcab flatbed pickup. There's always quite a few guys standing around gawking at the dead deer. One guy walks over to the back of my pu and then yells at his buddies"Holy crap, he has a truck load". Honestly, we had 8 or 9 total but it made quite a pile.

They have a program here called MLD land management. It's a management program and their seasons differ from the rest of us. They hunt a lot longer and different weapons are legal at different times then the regular laws.

Last weekend was also youth weekend. It was archery season for most of us still. I took my first archery doe last weekend.

Love your optimism Kodiak, and I sure wish you more good luck. I can take one in New Mexico IF I can get drawn. I can legally take more deer in many states than I can possess in NM. I think I gotta get one of those 'off shore' cold storage places, like the rich guys do.
