A pair that frequent my woods at night hoot with a sound that is both eerie and sad sounding but,I still enjoy their calls.
If you want more pictures of owls throw out a fox call. Dying rabbit, gray fox pup or what ever, they all call owls. For every fox you call in you will call in 6+ owls. Amazing how many of them are around. You have to be sharp to know when one has come in, seldom will you hear them and then only a small swoosh of air if they are close enough. But if you keep your eyes up and you ears open you will see quite a few of them. With the right equipment you could get some great pictures.
we do not see or hear very many , but the very rare occasion we enjoy seeing them .
The noises they were making I had never heard before, like a mix of an owl, dove, bobcat, yote, all rolled into one at the top of a tree.....

It's mating season. Hangout at the local club after a few rounds nd you will hear much of the same sounds.

Is it really owl mating season? Ima have to try the predator call trick one night

Where I live it is late February to March. It's getting a little late but a young motivated member of any species will make some noise.
i know that is not the best pic, any clue as to what type it was?
Not from here, about all I can say is it doesn't look big enough to be a great horned owl, but I'm no expert.
Not sure what kind that is but I guess it could be a whooo Hooo owl

Probably a barn owl. We have one that hangs out in our oak tree, outside our bedroom window. Love that sound. That and the sound of tree frogs in the summer.

Back when I did a lot of coyote calling owls would always show up in no time flat, sometimes in numbers. You could track them with the red lens spotlight as they swooped down over the speaker, then go hang out in surrounding trees trying to spot that rabbit in agony.
It was pretty much guaranteed cheap entertainment while waiting to get a shot at the yotes. [:p]
Here at the Jersey shore its usually a pleasant weather nite when they call for mates.
