Why right and not left?

Any speculation as to why rifleing is right hand (counter clockwise) twist and not left hand (clockwise)?

Maybe because 80% of the population is right handed and this just came about by convention?..........I can't think of any reason why it would make a difference.

It's been said that when a toilet is flushed north of the equator water swirls in a different rotation than toilets south of the equator...does that mean bullet ballistics shot on one side of the equator have an advantage over those shot on the other side?.....where's Judge Dread when you need him? [:D]

I suspect it might be because most lathes and machinery turn in a counter clockwise rotation...that's why most drill bits have a right hand twist, it's only a guess

Easy answer! Liberal vs. conservative. Even the most liberal here on the board are only looking down the barrel in the wrong direction.[:)]

Left is derived from the Latin word sinister and Right is derived from the Latin word dexter.....................who wants to have their rifle known as having a sinister twist??????????[:D]

Basically when a barrel is rifled the gun drill machine ( which puts n the rifling) turns clockwise ( from the end of the barrel )

Because right hand lead on spirals or threads is the standard in the machining world, and left hands are specials?

I may be wrong, but I think some Enfields were left hand twist.

The Phillips and Rodgers Medusa has a left-hand twist. It's about the only gun I know of that does, though.

I would think there's no reason why it would be clockwise or counter-clockwise.

The twist is there to stabilize the bullet - so I'd figure that the earths rotation (in the north or south) would have little to do with the choise of rotation, as both the gun and projectile is generally at the same distance from the core of the earth. (Same relative speed at ground level, apart from the speed of the bullet offcourse.)

But I did hear, that some military/sniper weapons doesn't have the same twist as hunting/-sportingweapons.

But I can't think of any way why it's like that or if it's like that.
As long as it go boom and makes the bullet twist - then I'm happy =o)

Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.

Same reason a wheel is round, seemed like a good idea at the time. And sure enough, it was and is.

My rifles all have right hand twist, but I am trying to show them the error of their ways.

Some of the muzzleloaders had left hand twist as well. Probably built by Pennsylvania Pinkos.
