Only the one left. Giving me problems, infection, swelling and pain. Impacted. Should had this thing removed years ago. Been in there for 71 years. My wife's dental insurance (I'm included) is not in effect until September 1 so this will have to come "out of pocket". Whoopee!

Vaguely recall it in childhood. Complete anesthesia, not mentally present beyond counting 100, 99, 98 niiiiinnneedeeeesevvvvuuu........

Beyond that, I've had tons of dental reconstruction due to a car wreck long ago. One thing I learned about is pain control. As in get ahead of the problem.

Too many dentists get you out of the chair and hand you prescriptions to get filled on the way home. You are lucky to make it home before the numbness fades. Nothing pisses me off more about dentists than starting to hurt while waiting in line at a pharmacy.

Screw that idea, demand them a day or more before. Fill them. Have them in the car that will take you home afterwards along with a bottle of water.

When done in the chair get the hell out fast. Get in the car, somebody should be driving you, and start those pain pills while you are still numb. Do not wait for numbness to wear off. If you lose control of the pain, it is harder to regain it. So you want the pain killers building up in the blood stream before the injectable goodies run their course.

From here on it is a question of your own response to pain pills. Me, I'm told I seem to metabolize them unusually fast. Takes more meds and more frequently to keep control. My method was to accelerate dosages at the start then stretch them out over time. I also added non-prescription pills.

    Example:

Percocet works for me while Codeine is worthless. I'd take two Percosets in the car outside the dentists office. To that I'd add a Percogesic and a Tylenol. Building up the meds while still numb, that's the idea.

In 30 to forty minutes, another Percocet.

Hour after that, another Percocet and a Percogesic.

Two hours later ... small doses.

Four hours later ... small doses.

    Etc.

Generally never finished a pain prescription. Get down to soreness manageable by Tylenol within a day or two.

I was a lot younger then. Did not tell the doctor at first, I did sometime later. He was aghast, asked if I was having liver troubles?

    Nope, healthy as a horse.

    Your mileage will surely vary.

But do find your own way to keep the pain managed, control of it not lost so you do not have to dose heavily to regain it.

And, um, talk to the dentist/doctor about it ahead of time.

The Navy pulled all my Wisdom teeth even though my Dentist said they were all fine. Excuse was because I was in Sub-ron but I was on a Sub rescue and never going under water.

Never had the Novacaine wear off pre meds but I don't take anything as strong as Percocet either. All those Percocets would knock me out.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

They got 3 of mine and the last one my jaw was dislocated. So still have one and its not causing me any troubles yet so it stays. But the next one out they had better knock me out.

I had a wisdom tooth in the same shape as yours. I put it off long as I could and decided it had to go.

I busted * to my dentist all set to have it pulled and he took one look and said, "nothing doing till the infection is gone". Said he wouldn't touch it now.

He put me on some antibiotics and told me to come back a week later.
Week later I showed up, he gave me a couple shots and some N2O to breathe and I never felt a thing.[:)]

weenies. I got 4 pulled at the same time (2 regular, 2 impacted and sideways) with local anesthetic only because it was cheaper. yeah I got the pain meds on the way home but didn't need them.

I can relate. Had all 4 pulled with one being sideways using nova cane, drove home and no problems! We're all different I guess[;)]

Pretty much the way mine were when I had all 4 pulled at once while in the Army. The Captain did a pretty good job, and I had almost no pain afterward.quote:Originally posted by buschmaster

God, I was a kid when I had them out. I don't even remember it. Wife is a dental hygienist and said it can be very painful after the surgery. Donna said to just follow the dentist advice and keep it dry and clean for a few days. In your case, she said they will probably stitch you up pretty good. Oakie
