Police: Newlywed Wife Tried To
Kill Husband More Than Once
COLUMBUS, Ohio, 6:46 p.m. EDT April 10,
2002 - Columbus police said that Christina
Combs, 29, and David Combs, 26, were married
less than one month ago, but the honeymoon has
ended for the newlyweds.
Christina has been charged
with attempted aggravated
murder after police said she
slipped an illegal substance in
her husband's soft drink at a
Taco Bell Sunday night.
Police said that additional
charges could be filed against
Christina Combs because this is not the first time she tried to kill
her husband.
An investigation has revealed that Christina Combs thought about
drugging her husband and she planned it, NewsChannel 4's
Nancy Burton reported.
Police said that her first attempt was Friday night while the couple
was driving from Indianapolis to Columbus to visit David Combs'
family.
Police said that Christina Combs slipped something into her
husband's drink in the car. According to police, David Combs
started foaming at the mouth and drove himself to St. Ann's
Hospital in Westerville.
The hospital's report indicates that Combs told police he took the
drugs so police didn't pursue the matter, Burton reported.
"That was his own statement. We didn't have anything to believe
otherwise at this point and time," said Columbus Sgt. Stan Latta.
On Sunday, Combs was treated at St. Ann's Hospital again for
drug overdose symptoms. Police said that it was then they
questioned Christina Combs.
Police said that Combs admitted she slipped something into her
husband's drink at the Taco Bell on Polaris Parkway when he
went to pick up his order.
"After we did the interview in regards to Christina, she confessed
to being responsible for both incidents," Latta said.
Investigators found a vial in the couple's car, Burton reported. It is
being tested to see if it contains the narcotic crystal
methamphetamine or an animal tranquiller called special "k".
Police said that the motive behind the attempted killings could
possibly be money. David Combs is a Marine staff sergeant and
had a life insurance policy worth $250,000, Burton reported.
"I think it's one of those things
when you marry someone or
love someone, you think this
is the last thing that will
happen," Latta said.
Burton reported that David
Combs is doing well, but is
embarrassed and
overwhelmed emotionally by what has happened.
Investigators said that they are also looking into whether someone
else was involved, Burton reported.
Since the alleged poisoning occurred in Delaware County,
Columbus police said that the case will be handed over to the
Delaware County prosecutor's office.
Christina Combs will be transferred to the Delaware County Jail
and her bail will remain at $500,000. She is currently at the
Franklin County Jail.
