Hunting the Land of Entrapment

edited April 2002 in General Discussion
I moved to New Mexico about a year ago, and the only hunting I have done is shooting the crows out of my neighbors bird feeder with a beebee gun. I'm not even sure I would know what to do out here, coming from Michigan all we do is throw out some apples or corn, climb a tree and wait for something brown to walk by. I think I would be old and gray before somthing walked by out here. The only animals I see in the forests with any regularity have dreadlocks, noserings and have bellbottoms on when ther not frolicing through the woods naked. I thought of bagging one of them, but I might have trouble getting it mounted.
Seriously though does anybody know where I can hunt in this state, there isnt anything I wouldnt hunt , although some of the deer I've seen had less meat on them than my border collie. I generally bow hunt and would love to try my hand at bear, elk or antelope. But I'm not a rich guy so I cant spend 5000 on a guided hunt,so I'm on my own. I would be very grateful to anyone who could help me out on this. Many thanks in advance.

Crows with a BB gun? Yer a better shot than me if you can kill a crow with a BB gun. What do you do, shoot 'em in the eye?

You say in this post that the only shooting you've been doing is the crow - BB gun deal, yet on Ask the Experts you talk about shooting all those wild dogs out to 100 yards with that old Maddsen 30-06.

Only 7 posts and already a discrepancy? Ya gotta remember that what you post is read and remembered by others. You've already got me wonderin' iff'n yer fer real or not, had a bunch of posing goin' on around here lately.

Walruss, where in New mexico are you? There is an enormous amount of public land here so finding a place to hunt is not a problem. As always, finding a good place to hunt takes a little work. Both the mule deer and white tail herds are somewhat marginal here and drought (like the past 6 years) is really hard on the herds. That said, they are here and you can at least get a shot. If you are in ABQ we should talk over coffee. Applications for draw hunts must be in by 27 April, but there is still over counter deer and turkey.

The dogs I shoot are up at my cabin in northern Michigan. Dogs dont last long in the dessert the coyotes would eat them. I never said I kill crows With a beebee gun, just shoot them then they fly away. I have no use for a bunch of dead crows.

You really need to lighten up , whats the matter didnt your mother hug you enough when you were little???

He Dog- You got any connections for landowner antelope tags?

There seem to be two choices: collect a lot of stars.........or have a life!

Got it Walruss if you want to pull it off your post go ahead.

Vol Fan, no I don't, by the dept. of game and fish has lists so it is not hard to begin to make some contacts from that list. We just apply for the draw hunts.

My mom hugged me plenty, but thanks for asking.

Like I said, we've had a bunch of posing going on around here lately, bad time to be a newby. If I was wrong about you, I apologize. Maybe my radar is malfunctioning.

I plan on picking up a scope at the Gun Show next week end and then heading out to a out door range or to some BLM land. I only need to sight in for 250 yards. I also need to sight in my AR 180. Life is good and it only gets better. If you are going to the Gun show next week end lets meet before, during or after.

I am near Bayfield, Colorado north & west of some of you guys. I have friends from Texas come up each Oct-Nov to elk hunt. Turkey season is open right now.

How are the gun shows in Albuquerque? Worth the drive? After 33 years in Houston, I find they are meager in this area...infrequent, very few exhibitors, very few customers, and too much non-gun stuff. And Colorado has the law requiring ALL gun show transfers to go through an FFL for the background check.

One of the finest shooting facilities and areas to hunt is located at the NRA Whittington Center....here is a link....

I stopped at the whittington ctr. last time I drove up to denver. Its almost an over night trip if you want to spend any time there. Albuquerque is almost 3 hrs away. It is pretty nice though.

As far as gun shows Im not sure this will be my First one in Albuquerque, but I'll let you know..

Ref44, there are indeed several shows a year here. The best are put on by the NM Gun Collectores Assn. and will run to 400-425 tables, so they are respectable but not huge. The others are put on by a commercial promoter and I don't bother to go unless I need something I can't pick up cheaper or easier elsewhere. The NMGCA shows have been a mixed bag, some are really pretty good, and some are less good. The best two are Mar and Oct. but there is another June 1&2 (I think, if you are interested I will check the newsletter) that may be pretty good as well.
