Can one safely shot a 22 short in a 22 lr pistol?

All things being in order...yes (rev/ Semi/ singleshot?).
We use CB mini caps in 22 Lrs often. Will NOT work a semi-auto action (makes it a single shot) but no harm to gun or shooter.

There are some folks who beleive that extensive shooting .22 short in .22 LR chamber will damage the chamber, erode the throat etc, resulting in loss of accuracy.

I messed up an Ithica model 49 doing just that. It takes a lot of shooting to do it though.

Thanks for asking that question. I, too, have wondered about using shorts. Of course, with LR going for less than half what I pay for shorts, I don't shoot many shorts. [:)]

if you shoot a short in LR bbl, the bullet must jump to the lands and grooves, because of the shorter case length. that is where the wear takes place. for comparison..picture shooting a .308 in 30-06.
with that said, gun makers have beem making guns that will chamber all 3 bullets and are so marked 'short/long/long rifle,' for years. though it works, they never said its accurate and good for the gun.

22 shorts are great for taking care of stray cats within the city limits. I'll just leave it at that.

I believe the above is one concern. In addition, if you fire a bunch of .22 shorts, if you try to fire some .22 LR without cleaning the chamber you might have some problems with them chambering.

My experience with CB shorts is they are dirty. They crudded up my single shot so bad the bolt would not close.

I agree with buddyb about CB caps. They seem to have some sort of waxy coating on the bullet (at least the CCI's do). The plated .22 shorts from Remington don't have this problem.

gearheaddad: Conibear + peanut butter = no more gray squirrels in the attic.

FYI for you non-trappers: a Conibear is a body-grip trap.

Got a good deal on an old astra pistol that only shoots 22 short and never thought before about if it was ok to use them on a 22lr

It is not a problem to shoot a few, but I would not do it a lot since the chamber could be messed up a bit if it is done continually. Since .22 LR's actually cost less ... why mess around with shorts?
