Why buy used when I can get it new for another $20.

I hate going to a pawn shop and finding guns for what I can get them new for. It seems like in the town I live in, the dealers sell their used guns for $20 less than I can get them for new and the pawn shops for more. When I try to haggle with them, they just tell me to go elsewhere. I find that their target market is those who are either ignorant to firearm values or who don't shop around. Any comments? Same thing going on in your town? Dealers point of view?
"Because the next dealers price is only a click away..." -I thought that one up. :)

I see the exact same thing in my local pawnshops. If you even hint at haggling, they get pissed and tell you to leave. I'll NEVER buy at a pawnshop, not matter what the price.

Dear Lee,I think what you find in your area is universal. Pawn shops generally deal with people that are more or less desperate to sell or pawn items. Lower costs equate to less money tied up in inventory. This lower cost provides a greater time period to find a sucker. Well informed buyers, like yourself, should avoid these shops if it bothers you. I only visit a few occasionally to look around and be amazed at the asking prices. Never to shop seriously. Recently saw a used 10/22 with a cheap Tasco on SALE for $410.00! Oh boy, and the price was firm. I don't know what type of person would buy an overpriced gun from these places but most stay in business. Our local largest pawn broker/gun dealer opposes all gun shows in our area with pamphlets and advertising. He also will not handle an internet transaction for a fee.

I know what you mean and I am a pawnbroker. And it is not just with guns. I went into a pawn shop in Pensacola FL and they had a MTD 20" mower in adv condition priced $129.00. The same thing new at WalMart is $89.97. I asked the guy if he sold many at that, he just shrugged. Reckon he just worked there and doesn't really care long as he gets his check. I don't understand how some of 'em stay in business.

Some years ago I was looking for a M 94. I looked a used in gun shops and pawn shops. Everything was at least $150 no matter how bad the condition, and I mean some with cracked stocks patched with baling wire. I bought a new one for $220. Only buy used at shows these days, and only when I have researched values and can assess the condition properly.
