Any Woodsman Here????

I took a walk in the woods yesterday and saw something I cannot explain.

Two branches in the same tree approximately ten feet from the ground had the bark shredded.

The branches looked as if a buck had used them as a rub. The branches were about as big as you thumb and three to four feet long and shredded the full length.

Anyone have any idea what caused this?

Bambi on stilts? Seriously, though, given the height from ground and the size of the branches, unless you have *really* heavy snow accumulations, I'd tend to suspect a porcupine. The wildlife biologists in your state F&G might be able to give you an answer.

If you are in the range of porcupines that is the most likely shredder.
