Schwarzenegger to run for governor

18jul02
ACTOR Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared his intention to run for Governor of California in 2006. Advertisement

The screen star, 54, currently filming Terminator 3 in Los Angeles, said he was interested in taking on incumbent Gray Davis.
Speaking at a breakfast meeting of about 15 Republican governors Schwarzenegger said: "It (politics) gives me the greatest satisfaction - much more than going down another red carpet to do a movie premiere. To go and create after-school programs, help special Olympians, inspire kids to stay away from drugs and gangs."

He said he could imagine himself as California's governor, following in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan, who went on to become US President in 1980.

Politics is a family affair for Schwarzenegger, who is married to Kennedy relative and television news correspondent Maria Shriver. They have four children.

Or is he just another rich, self indulging individual, that would ride his fame into power?

Unfortunately, Arnold could never become President without a Constitutional Amendment ("No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, or a naturalized citizen who has starred in a Terminator movie, shall be eligible to the office of President..."), but he would make a great Governor of KA, maybe turn it back into CA.

I thought Arnold was anti gun, am I wrong? If so Im gonna kick myself because I had a chance to meet him last year and said I didnt want to because I thought he was against the 2nd ammendment and the individual right to keep and bear arms.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

I was thinking like 4Godandcountry. I thought he was like a lot of the western stars that preached gun control even though they made their living pretending with guns. Like Gregory Peck, Ed Asner, Dru Barrymore, etc. Could be wrong. I would like to be in this case.

I'm not sure, but I think he's the Republican in his family, mostly because he has a healthy interest in American freedom of enterprise. There are a lot of Republicans who are mostly into the economic side. I have no idea how Arnold feels about gun control, but I sure would like to. Trouble is, his stand in favor could be his weak point against Davis. Perhaps if enough Californians are tired of the oppressive gun laws there, he might seem like a breath of fresh "home security" air. I don't know. I think he'd make a decent governor, and I think his heart's generally in the right place. He's sure no cynic. But of course it's his self confidence bordering on arrogance that's taken him this far. If you have any doubts, go rent the old movie PUMPING IRON. It's a hoot, and definitely worth seeing.

Don't forget what family he is related to by marriage, the worst anti-gun family on the planet: the Kennedys.

Arnold puts himself forward as a Republican, but theres Republicans, and then there's Republicans. Besides, although a conservative governor would be a step in the right direction, it will take more than that to reverse California trends. The legislature will also need overhauling - even some Republicans in the California legislature can't be trusted (as if any politician is trustworthy).

I would vote for Arnie, just so at the end of his first term I could hear him say, "I'll be back."
