But I did that stuff too when I was young. I guess as I get older, I've begun to have more respect for life.

True that they eat lots of berries, fuits, etc. but they're also big time carrion eaters. In this respect they're like little flightless buzzards.
Based upon what I've witnessed I'll leave their meat to someone else, but they do have high quality fur.
A possum in the middle of the road, in the middle of the day is NOT right.
You did the right thing!!

BS, a friend of mine put one in a cage and fed him corn, he said it tasted very bad
Evidently your friend didnt know how to cook.. My mother made the best opossum you would ever want to eat.. Back when Food was Rationed.. Raccoon and opossum were common table fare.. Raccon you could cook imediatly, opossums were too greasy so we caught them alive and fed em for a while...
Roast Opossum:.
2
The opossum is a very fat animal with a peculiarly flavored meat.
3
It is dressed much as one would dress a suckling pig, removing the entrails, and if desired, the head and tail.
4
After it is dressed, wash thoroughly inside and out with hot water.
5
Cover with cold water to which has been added 1 cup of salt.
6
Allow to stand overnight. In morning, drain off the salted water and rinse well with clear water.
7
Stuff opossum with opossum stuffing (stuffing recipes next); sew opening or fasten with skewers.
8
Place in roaster, add 2 tablespoons water and roast in moderate oven (350?F) until tender and richly browned, about one and one half hours.
9
Baste every 15 minutes with drippings.
10
Remove skewers or stitches, and place on heated platter.
11
Skim fat from gravy remaining in pan.
12
Opossum Stuffing:.
13
Brown onion in fat.
14
Add finely chopped opossum liver and cook until liver is tender.
15
Add crumbs, a little red pepper, Worcestershire sauce, egg, salt and water to moisten.

HOW DID HE KNOW DID THE POSSUM TELL HIM?
WHO GETS RABIES?
Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that can infect all warm-blooded animals including humans. This means it can infect you or your family. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, bats, woodchucks, cats, dogs, and cattle are most likely to get rabies. Rabbits, opossums, squirrels, hamsters, rats and mice seldom get rabies. Birds, reptiles and fish do not get rabies.
Opossums rarely get rabies.. they are in fact less harmful to humans than dogs, cats, cows, and many other mamals. When I see one peering out of the prolapsed * of a days old, maggot infested dead cow I'm concerned about a LOT more than just rabies. [xx(]
As for all mammals being able to get rabies, that's true but there's a reason some are less likely than others.
The rabies virus can only live/remain viable in a fairly narrow temperature range. Not all critter's normal body temperature (specifically the brain) creates the environment for it to live.
For this same reason, once an infected animal dies the virus doesn't remain viable after it's body temperature drops below this range.
body temperature, and the virus doesn't survive well. Opossums are natures garbage collectors just like Vultures are..There are not many things an opossum cant eat..
Heck people eat chickens, and chickens will eat their own poop..
I see another 'caption this' thread coming on.
The temp range is the reason opossums do not contract rabies.. They have a lower than average

dont forget pigs/hogs they eat anything
Txs has a point. Last year I was calling coyotes from the door of an old barn which had a dead semi-mummified cow as it's centerpiece. I heard something rattling and looked over my shoulder to see a possum climbing out of the carcass.
Only reason i killed this one was i think it had rabies. It was acting really crazy. The only thing is it was not foaming at the mouth. In the county i was in rabies is a big problem. Thats the only reason i killed it. I dont like killing animals unless its for eating.
It may have been injured by a car, but rabies is extremely rare in opposums, and marsupials in general.

Hogs and chickens are downright picky compared to these things.I've actually seen them inside humans who have had died unattended out in the sticks. They're nothing more than buzzards with good PR.
Maybe it was playing POSSUM...[:D]

Possums don't get rabies.
I hate i killed it then. I feel bad now. It was just acting like it was on crack or something and in broad daylight i just thought it was sick.[:(]
Possum walkng down the road at 11 am. I'm shooting it too Dave.
Rarely doesn't equal never.
And if not rabies, a crack smoking possum needs killing anyway.
Zero interest in eating one.
Where are some of you boys from? Are ya'll talking possum or that yankee stuff?! [:D][:D][:D]
Possums are Australian. The marsupial in North American is an opossum. Unless you are Southern (Washington?) linguistically challenged.
