BBC Chief Sorry Over Anti-US TV AudienceSeptember 15, 2001 4:43 pm EST LONDON (Reuters) - The head of the British Broadcasting Corporation, Greg Dyke, apologized on Saturday for broadcasting a live discussion program in which audience members blamed U.S. foreign policy for Tuesday's terror attacks.More than 2,000 viewers complained after seeing the former U.S. Ambassador to Britain, Philip Lader, brought close to tears after attempts to express his sadness over the attacks were shouted down by people expressing anti-American views."On balance, I think it was an inappropriate program to broadcast live just two days after the attacks in the United States and I would like to apologize to viewers who were offended by it," Dyke said in a statement. The scenes on the Question Time program on Thursday night prompted Dyke, the BBC's Director General, to add: "With hindsight this program should have been recorded and edited before it was broadcast.""I have today spoken to Philip Lader, and apologized for any distress the program may have caused him," Dyke said. One audience member had asked whether the attacks were the result of a failure of US foreign policy "with millions of people around the world despising the American nation," according to the Independent newspaper.Mr. Lader, who was slow hand clapped by some members of the audience, was tearful. "I find it hurtful that you are suggesting that a majority of the world despises the United States," he said according to news sources. The Sun newspaper said that one Arab woman replied: "It is the American government which is talking about war." The program's presenter, David Dimbleby, struggled to control the discussion and tempers became raised, according to the BBC.The Corporation said that many of those who complained about the program said the audience seemed to contain a disproportionate number of people with anti-American views. The BBC said that the program tried to pick audiences with a broad range of views and had hoped to stage a frank discussion about the attacks.

Maybe our foreign policy should be revised- let's just ignore everybody else. Many mnay moons ago we had a policy similiar, it was called isolationism.Perhaps if we stop feeding, defending, and bailing out every two bit backwards country who can't mange their own affairs, we will stop annoying their equally two bit backwards enemies. The evil empire has rebuilt, fed, and/or defended Europe, England, large parts of Africa and Asia, South America, and several assorted other areas. Lets just keep our money, food, and guns to ourselves so as not to offend anyone. It's a pretty safe bet we won't be getting any of it back anyway, even now. While we are at it, lets close our borders so all those anti Americans unhappy in their own country aren't tempted to immigrate to anyplace as awful as the United States.

Would that we could, MM. Integrated global economy, many raw critical raw materials not available domestically, etc. Not only did the economy tank, badly, in that era largely because of isolationism / protectionism, it allowed some very unpleasant forms of cancer to grow unchecked until we were *forced* to deal w/ them by Pearl Harbor. Much as our limp-wristed responses to terrorism in the Carter & Klinton administrations allowed the current variety to metastasize. Would that we could, but we'd be in worse shape the next day than we are now.

I seriously think that the major problem that others have with the U.S. is our Wealth and Power. After all, our Nation is only 225 years old ... still in its infancy in compairson to almost all other nations, yet it is the U.S. that that defends the weak ... as been said before, we are always there to lend a helping hand, prop up the saging enonomy of other NATIONS, help rebuild after deviatation ... even sent aid to Japan after we bombed them ... ... maybe I'm off base, but I think they are jealous ... how many Taleban do you think are sitting around their homes just chatting via computer, and do so for entertainment and do so on a regular basis? What was that old saying, I'd walk 10,000 miles to smoke the right Camel ... It seems to me that alot of folks think we cant survive on our own.Iconclast im not singaling you out I agree that opur economy is based on a world market HOWEVER I would say that the rest of the world is more dependennt on us than we are them.so let them put embargoes on us and well see how long they last the U.S. has always led the world economy even b4 our government became limp-wristed pansies catering to the likes and dislikes of the rest of the world. In short we are still the baddest boy on the block and IMHO we need to RESUME acting like it
