A new variant of W32/Badtrans@MM, referred to as Badtrans.b, has been spreading rapidly among consumers this week. This variant spreads via the Microsoft Outlook program, and, like the Nimda virus seen earlier this year, can be activated if the user reads email using the Preview Pane in Outlook, even if the attachment is not opened. The message will have a "Re:" subject line that may look like a reply to a message that the user sent. The attachment name is variable and may contain words such as "New_Napster_Site README" or "Card", along with extensions like "mp3" or "doc", which may tempt a user to open it.Once launched, Badtrans.b will install a back-door that enables hackers to easily access an infected system, and a keylogger program, which records keystrokes from the machine. It is believed this is an attempt to capture the user's passwords and other sensitive information. I was hit by W32/Badtrans@MM earlier this year. It went thru my MCafee anti-virus like s$$t thru a goose. Needless to say i dumped MCafee for Norton.
