Were you to be in the market for a new Remington Model 7, what caliber would you get?I was leaning toward the 7-08.I also think this might be a neat little woods gun if rebarrelled to the .358 Winchester.Comments?

I have been hearing about Remington coming out with the 270 and 300 Short Action Magnums in the model 7, I think either of those would be great to have.

You are right on with the 7mm-08. It is a nice, short, light, woods and stalk gun and caliber.

I have had the model Seven in 223, 243, 260, 7mm-08 and 308. All shot very well and the handling qualities are fine. At present two of my brothers have one each in 308 and my niece just got one in 260. We hunt in mixed cover, thick furs and birches/scrub oaks and the next thing you know you will be in an open meadow or clear cut. These guns are accuracte enough to still reach out even with the 18&1/2 or 20 inch barrels. All of our scoped guns are equipped with Leupolds; can't go wrong with this combination. The choice of caliber is yours but the choice of firearm is excellent. My personal choice would be the 308 because of the choice of bullets available; I know the 7mm bullets offer a wide choice but they don't go as heavy as the 30 caliber. As far as the 358 I agree with you entirely; it would be a good choice and I have one on a 700 Remington action with a Douglas #3 barrel topped with a Leupold; all set into a custom piece of walnut. By the way, Lew Hortons had a few of the 260's on sale just yesterday.

Let's see... 7mm-06, 7mm Express, .280 Rem, drawing a blank... what else?Nunn, 7mm-08 is an ideal cartridge for the Model 7. I think the short mags are going to give up some velocity in those short barrels... remember the Model 660?
