I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ATF. EVERY TIME I BUY A GUN I END UP GETTING A FINGERPRINT CARD BECAUSE OF DENIED PURCHASE. SOME OF THESE GUN PURCHASES ARE ONLY A MONTH OR TWO APART. I END UP GETTING THE GUN BUT ABOUT TWO MONTHS LATER. SOMETIMES THESE PURCHASES ARE 3-6 GUNS AT A TIME. WHAT IS WRONG HERE. SHOULD I CONTACT A LAWYER OR WHAT. IF A PERSON WAS GOING TO ROB OR SHOOT SOMEONE HE SURE WOULD NOT GO OUT AND BUY A FIREARM TODO THIS. HE WOULD STEAL ONE OR BUY IT ON THE OPEN MARKET. I BELIEVE GUNS COULD BE REGISITED BUT THIS BACKGROUND CHECK IS WASTING PEOPLES TIME. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!! I AM A HONEST, TAX-PAYING, NON-CRIMAL AMERICAN WHAT CAN I DO!!!

I would first contact BATF and find out why the purchases are being denied.

-These purchases are 3-6 guns at a time.-Could your multiple purchases be the problem? I would bet there is not one in 50,000 calls to NICS involve that many guns at the same time. The "authorities" may have some computer mechanism that halts, what they consider to be, unusually large volume purchases until they have a chance to check out the buyer. That's just a guess on my part. I know it's none of my business, but why are you buying so many guns? [This message has been edited by Rafter-S (edited 03-01-2002).]

any time you get a denial, the dealer should give you the NTN# and a guide for appealing, you must follow thru all the way! not just stop when you get the OK to make that purchase. make sure you send all requests by regestered mail. NICS must give a reason, then you must follow thru with the challenges, as outlined in the guide. [This message has been edited by fergusonmorse392 (edited 03-01-2002).]

I bought 6 guns at one time from the same dealer. The call in got approved. So probably isn't the number.

When you call in to NICS they don't care how many you purchase at one time. It isn't asked...

First off, I don't agree with everything the BATF does, but it is part of BATF job to track multiple gun purchases. I do not have a problem with that. They are tasked to track potential gun running activities. I buy multiple guns from time to time, and yes they have checked me out. If you are not trafficing in illegal gun trade, then you have nothing to worry about and should not be denied. There are various reasons why one gets wrongly denied, sometimes it could be as simple as a problem with their computer system, or you may even have the same name as someone that has an arrest record. Either way it will get cleared up eventually. I know that at times it can be a real pisser dealing with it, but just have patience and it will all work out.Boomer, the ever patient

I thought multiple purchases applied to handguns only, not long guns. There is no where on the 4473 that requires the number of guns purchased at the same time to be reported to the BATF. If it is handguns that is another matter, but, unless they have changed the regs, the dealer is supposed to report the multiple purchases to them. I think if you wait a week between handgun purchases, the multiple form does not have to be filled out and sent.

The number of guns being purchased has no bearing on the NICS check. Apparently, your personal information is very close if not identical to someone who is ineligible to purchase a firearm. Have you considered the possiblity of identity theft? Checked your credit report lately? Could be just an unfortunate coincidence, but...
