In my 4th year of seious tukey hunting and have yet to find that one call I know I can depend on. I don't seem to do too well with the diaphrams, so I have been using the H S Struts wood witch slate. I've gotten some in, but then I'm up the creek without a paddle.(not enough hands) Any suggestions are welcome.

Make your own calls! I find homemade calls better than the commercial type because they sound unique, and might get the attention of the bird. Turkeys start to recognize that commercial sound, and I think they are looking for something different than the "same old, same old." I have had the most sucess with a wingbone call I mad from a hens wing. I have made paddle calls, diaphragm type calls, and my favorite is a little scratch thing I made out of pine(believe it or not), and a little 2X2" piece of walnut scrap to scratch the lip of my pine box.And I think the most important thing to do(at least in my experience) is call only a little more than not calling. Keep calling quiet, and down to a minimum.

at least it only took a few minutes to get it over with. Salzo, I never thought about trying to make my own. Guess I'm one of those overcommercialized types. But, hell, it can't hurt to give it a try. Thanks for that input.

jh, quaker boy are very good. I use this in a double reed also use a black widow slate call. I have 12 plus birds, also tried to make one as stated above but had no luck and wouldn't mind trying again.Rich

On a serious note, if you go to Wally world or such,(show my age and say Western Auto, where I got my first one). One of them horns with the rubber ball you squeeze for bicycles. Throw the rubber ball away, and dig out the noise maker thing.(don't throw it away. You can put in your mouth and make noises and no one will know it's you). Any who, that horn makes a pretty good wingbone call with practice.Just kind of like kiss in it, with your hands cupped over the bell end.

You can not go wrong with a wood box paddle.Very little practice and it will work better than any.

Get a medicine bottle of the pop type lid and then find some latex gloves. Cut a little less than half of the lid top out leaving the rim to snap back down. Cut the latex in a straight line and place over a little more than half of the bottle opening. Place lid back on so that the opening you cut is blocked by the latex. Cut the entire bottom out of the bottle all but about a 1/8" lip all the way around. Adjustment may be necessary but now all you half to do is "blow" the word "chalk" a few times into the latex/lid side and you should be hearing a hen noise or something that resembles it. You can use your hands as a cup on the opening of the call to vary pitch and inflection.
If you can't fix it with a hammer, take it to a mechanic. will270win@aol.com ~Secret Select Society Of Suave Stylish Smoking Jackets~

another thing that is misconcievedc about turkeys is that it is not as much the sound of the call as it is the rethym of the call. THE sound contributes to the effectiveness of the call, but the sequence makes all of the difference in the world. If a certain sequence that you are using does not work try another. songdog

I always carry several calls when I hunt.A box call,a slate call with slate on one side and aluminum on the other side,Several diaphrams calls. When they are in close and you need both hands my hunting partner has a push button call that is strapped to the bottom of his guns forearm. One finger is used to operate it.You could also practice making turkey sounds with your own voice. This works good for me when they are up close.
