We Have A Duty

We as a nation are obligated to stop an insidious disease spreading across the world. In history, like circumstances have occurred and action delayed until it was too late. That hesitation allowed the Nazi to wreak havoc on Europe. After the prosecution of the European war, the communist ideologues were recognized for what they were by several, Patton, Churchill, and Marshall et al. And again we did nothing. And millions paid the price for fifty years, some still paying. We are now faced with an enemy more evil than the last two combined. And we have the power to do something about it. What we need is the resolve. It is our duty to the nations of the world. They are looking to us to act and will support us when we start. We are the only nation with the resources to do this, the ONLY one. We must crush, completely and immutably, all who would use such tactics to express their views and those who harbor them as well. There will be innocents killed and injured. But to do nothing invites more. If we lay down we will get stepped on. We do not need to incinerate cities. We can, it's just not necessary. We can and should kill the guilty but we must avoid harming innocents whenever we can. We cannot allow the guilty to use those who are not as shields. This battle must be won. Our enemy has shown he will commit the most heinous act. Should he achieve his goal of nuclear weapons we are lost. This is not going to be a pleasant experience but there are, God help us, worse things.Clouder..

Exactly! Just as we had a moral obligation to rid the world of nazism and communism, we have the same obligation to rid the world of terrorism. All these fanatics think they have the right to spread their sick and twisted ideologies, it's time we asserted our right to spread our righteous ones. To paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt, "Walk (and talk) softly and carry a (very) big stick".

Well, I'll agree with Clouder here.Understand that there are two clear and distinct types of enemy here. The individual(s) who orchestrate and carry out these acts of war and the nation-states that give them shelter and sustenance are severally liable and both should receive the maximum retribution. This does not equate to the mass killing of uninvolved civilians, regardless of the distateful nature of their ideology. Nuclear weapons are not the answer.General Powell indicated this will be a long campaign, and he is right. Accomplishing this two-pronged mission will require complete resolution not only from the military but the public as well. We have that now, sure, while CNN still replays the horrendous video footage but we need to still have that resolve next month and next year. The key is not necessarily the elimination of one man (although it would certainly make a good point). The key is to drive home the point that sheltering these people is a very dangerous business for a nation-state. Once no nation will dare shelter and give succor to these despicable vermin, the people themselves will be self-limiting.It seems a foregone conclusion that Osama bin Laden is the likely suspect of this unprecedented act of lunacy. It is indisputable that he is aided by the Talibun government. We should not stop until bin Laden is removed, and the Talibun toppled. Then, move to #2 on the list. I venture that by the time we get to #3 or #4, they will be a LOT easier to find...Anyway, I need to take another pill.

Bin Laden HAS to go. If he's not the one responsible for this attack, it's only because someone else got here first. We might also consider putting a price (say 5 million)on the heads of Bin Laden, Arafat, et. al. Somebody will give 'em up for that amount of cash.Mudge

Mudge,There's been a seven figure reward for bin Laden for quite some time. Part of the reason he's bunkered down in Afghanistan. I don't know that it will do any good to raise it. And at this point, I think I would prefer to see a series of smoking craters any way.

I believe we give the terrorist criminals too much credit when we think of them as Muslim fanatics. These sick cowards hide behind a twisted perversion of Islam; their real motives are pathetically base.I have had plenty of opportunity to get to know people of middle eastern descent, and the great majority of them were decent people, as far as I could tell. But I also became familiar with a small group who were just plain sick with hatred. I came to realize that these guys hated Jews, and they hated americans because in their view we were protecting Israel from them. Forget the fact that the Israelis had kicked their * from here to Sunday; that was the problem. It was apparent that their little egos had never properly developed; fundamentally, they had no confidence in their manhood, they were ashamed of the lickings they had taken, and the only way they were ever going to feel like they were men was if they managed to win one. They had very plainly grown up with these attitudes, and I must assume they learned them at their fathers' knees. These truths are pretty difficult to admit to yourself, therefore, the self-delusion that but for the US, they would win. Therefore, the self-delusion that your motives are righteous and religous. Perverting Islam provides a convenient way to justify the evil expressions of sick minds. Having seized upon the perversion of Islam for the basest of motives, it is far easier to convince yourself that you are a devout and religous person who wants only to punish the purveyors of sinful excess, than to admit that you are a sick little * with a damaged ego who lives only for revenge. These sick hypocrites hide behind their sick perversion of Islam, and it is an insult to decent Muslims everywhere to associate these miserable cretins with them. These guys didn't try to hide their disdain for us. They told us they thought we were stupid to let them into our country and educate them. One of them even told us, right before he went back to Libya, that he would see us on the battlefield one day, and we should be ready, because he wouldn't hesitate to kill any of us. Then held out his hand as if holding a gun and pulling the trigger. There is a whole culture out there of these people; from the cradle they are taught that they will sit on the right hand of God the moment after they strike a blow against the "Great Satan". The Heaven described by Muhammed is not like the one in which most Christians believe; many of the pleasures they are supposed to be denying themselves on earth can be enjoyed there. There will always be volunteers for the likes of bin Laden as long as this sick culture exists.I do not support indiscriminate attacks on civilian women and children. But unless we essentially destroy this culture, this war will continue. And we need to appreciate that these people will kill us any way they can, if we don't kill them first. We can afford to show them no more mercy than we could afford to show rabid dogs.redcedars
