I went to a gun show today, seen a Model 24 that I liked, it was in 22Mag, 20 Guage. Guy wanted $300.oo for it. He claimed it was new and unfired, Although it was nice I doubt if it was unfired.
Well anyway I didn't buy it, now Im kicking myself in the butt for not getting it. My buddy said ah hold out until you find one that that is chambered for a little bigger caliber. I might be looking for awhile there hard to come by around here!!
Haven't seen any on GB lately either, Oh well at least Mabooger is happy I didn't spend the $300.00 L.O.L.

I think that's a little high for used. I see them fairly regularly here in Idaho (usually .223/12). Seems to me they're going in the mid-$200's. I'll keep an eye out, if you like.

JUST SOLD A 22MAG/OVER 20 GA ON THE AUCTION FOR $350.00. THE 22 MAG IS VERY HARD TO FIND. SEVERAL 22 LONG RIFLE AROUND BUT NOT MANY 22 MAGS.

I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

The 24V ("Varmit" I suppose) .222 over 20 gauge is nice too. $300 seems to be going asking price, he'd take less in cash I would imagine.

    Hey Pa:

There is a whole lot of variety in Savage 24s, and some of them bring over $300.

Most popular seems to me to be the original M24s with either the Tenite or walnut stocks. Original Stevens guns bring a premium, as do excellent or better guns. These were field guns, and truly nice ones are scarce.

Next would be the M24C Camper, which had a shorter barrel and originally came with a pack case. The cases were brown vinyl with a padded cotton interior, breakdown style, and designed for attachment to backpack or saddle. The cases are VERY hard to find in good shape, and I saw an average condition one bring about $85 by itself at auction not long ago. I bought a Camper from a guy in Gunlist a couple of years ago at least, 99% w/99% case, jumped on it at $300. Guy told me he could easily have gotten $400, as he had about 20 calls after mine and a couple of them tried to buy it out from under me for that much.

The M24 originally was a 22LR or 22WM over .410 or 20 ga. The 24V had a different frame and was chambered in several rifle calibers over 20 ga. Most of these have nice walnut stocks, but there are a few out there in .357 Mag that have nickel finish and pistol grip. The .357s walnuts are scarce too, and also bring a premium. The same design was used in the M240 .410 O/U. Later developments included 12 ga.

However, the average later models in good shape are $200 guns, the 24V is a little more. I would avoid the models with the break button on the front of the trigger guard, in heavy brush the gun can open unexpectedly.

If you have some questions about these nice little guns please just ask. If I know the answer I'll be glad to help.

Even with as much competition shooting as I do I have always felt that a Savage Model 24 was the perfect weapon to start a young person's hunting and shooting education. It's single shot and capable of taking small game in even the most modest of its calibers 22LR/20 gauge. A youngster taught to make every shot count will grow up to be a far better shot than someone embracing the "spray and pray" philosophy. Beach

The Savage/Stevens 24 seems to be under priced at least from what the Blue Book says. Here in Northern Illinois they usually ask at least $300 for nice ones and they sell pretty quickly. Most around here are the .22 /.410 or 20 guage. They are definitely hard to find above 90%%
    condition cause people used them!!

The 22/.410 here in Florida demands a price of 350.00 to 500.00
depending on condition,, I had two in the last year, almost perfect, brought 385.00 for one and 420.00 for the other.

I guess it depends on where ya live.

Does anyone know what the factory bbl length is on an original 24? I have one that looks like it has been cut but it measures 24". What y'all think:

How do you measure these things anyway? On my 24V it's 24 inches from the rear of the breach block to the muzzle. (.222 Rem over 20 gauge)

My barrel doesn't quite look like yours Pelican. Mine are separated and have a barrel band at the muzzle.

Pelican, looks factory to me. See your other post.

Pa, I have 3 or 4 of these things hanging around, maybe I have one that fits your needs that I would let go. I could sure use the room in the safe. E-mail me at redcedarss@aol.com.

Booger, later models had the split barrels, first with a soldered barrel block at the muzzle end, and later with a barrel band. Muzzle length is measured by the length of a rod inserted in the muzzle and all the way to the breech.

And guys, I forgot to mention the fanciest M24, the M24 Deluxe. Nice hardwood stocks with checkering, white spacer pistol grip cap and buttplate, and engraved satin nickel receiver.
