salzo, I think I finally got the definitive answer on U.S. Grant's ownership of slaves: when, how many, when freed, etc. It's rather complicated, involving his side of the family, which was strictly abolitionist, and his wife's (including his wife), who enjoyed the benefits of slave ownership.
