I seen Larry for a few minutes this morning.... he is in a great deal of pain and is getting pain med by IV plus injection.... the nurse said they are getting him up and into a chair later this afternoon... He was awake and talking abit to me...We were content to hold hands.. no words were needed....
I will be going up a few times today, but will post an update tonight once he has been up in the chair....
Thanks for the prayers, support, well wishes... Never have I had so much support from people I have never met...You know that saying comes back to me on how gun owners or lovers are cruel, heartless, sadistic people... I for one know first hand that is a bunch of cra*...The people on this forum are so loving, caring... and I know from the phone calls and posts I received, that you were just as worried and scared as I was... still am...
Heartless?... no..each and everyone has a heart the size of texas... and I thank God for people like you..and I know my husband does too..
Beth

    Well, Hal A. Looyah.

The best kind of pain is healing pain, cause you know it's less and less day by day, and when it's over you'll be all better. A little patience, and he'll be kickin' up his heels again. Good news.

Great news! Be sure he gets up and "walks" around when the time comes for it. It will hurt but it is SO important - as I'm sure you know. Having a "good" woman by your side is "good" medicine. He's a lucky man...

BR....Thats really good news. Also, I was thinking....which makes my head hurt every time, if they offer physical therapy in a few weeks, please advise him to take it. I didn't on my first operation and I regretted it. After my second, I went to the therapy and it was a world of difference on my healing time, physical strength and everything. It lasted for three months and I went to the classes three times a week for about three hours. Of course, this is for the heart operation, not on the other end. So, I don't know what they do about that. Anyway just wanted to let you know........
    Bless you both.

He is quite alert tonight... well, alert considering he is getting morphine into his back via IV and demerol shots... He sat up for approx 1 and 1/2 hours.. He said it "felt so good"....It does bring relief to the incision site... gets the pressure off...

Least he still has his sense of humor... he doesnt know if he has sutures or staples... but according to him he has pop rivets...He also kept apologising for, as he puts it, "being so mean to me"... he isnt mean.. just a tad short.. but that isnt him talking.. its the pain.. So I asked him what he was talking about.. you arent mean... he gave me a funny look and said.."liar"... *LOL..
We should have the biopsy of the lymph node on Monday... praying it holds true to what the surgeon says....
He will be up for a longer period tomorrow, the drs are pleased with his recovery so far....they were and are worried about the stents blocking up... but all looks good so far...
Thats the update so far... as for me.. well I am going to wash some walls... maybe I will tire myself out so I can sleep...

    Beth,

Be really careful if SaxonPig decides to visit--he might try to steal Classic's morphine!

It sounds like things are going well--the surgeon's opinion is very promising. The heart situation followed so soon by the surgery on the intestine must present a few extra difficulties--trying to keep the blood "thin" for the heart, but "thick enough" for good healing at the gut. Overall, it does sound like the original heart problems may have helped them find the rest in time.

I wonder if the hospital will be offerring some sort of "volume discount" on the cost of these "plumbing jobs" since he's getting both done at the same time?

Take care, wishing for a speedy recovery,

    Joe

Decided to stay home this morning... will be going up later this afternoon....I know this is all sooooooooooo normal, but hate it when it happens to me... I am so frigging angry today, so thought I best stay home.... I dont want to be in the room with him and say something I will regret later.. and in the mood I am in today..no doubt I would end up in tears... so I am going to beat up my walls (finish washing them..almost done the whole house)... beat up my baby (cat) and I might have this anger worked off by this afternoon.. I know its perfectly normal, so are tears, frustation,... you name it, I got hit with it last night..
I was cleaning the guns last night and it hit... the tears that is... then came the anger.... got the guns finished though...

    thanks for letting me vent...

BR, vent all you want! I've heard a lot worse, for far more trivial reasons, here & elsewhere. You're the one dealing w/ the stress, not Classic. For a while, he just can sit there, get high on the drugs & make passes at the nurses. After that 'vacation', he will be the one who's stressed out and your normal soothing personna will be needed. So blast away, most of us have thick hides and the ones that do not . . . have pretty thick heads!!

Went up and seen him... oh god is he one miserable man... as he puts it himself... an s.o.b... and I have to agree... told me next time I insist he see a dr... to take the .45 and shoot him...less painful... I know he is in a great deal of pain... but that remark smarted a bit... and yes.. I ended up in tears... Had to remind myself that its not him... its the pain... He was sitting up in the chair, looking for all intent and purposes a lot better... still drifting in and out because of pain med.... he was even angry at the nurses... said they are too rough... According to the studies I have done on pain... that surgery is listed in the top 10 as the most painful...

The pain of this operation was only partially eased by morphine in my case. Medical science seems to do a poor job in the area of pain management. Unfortunately, morphine also halts bowel activity and they will take it from you after two days or so because they want to hear bowel sounds from the abdomen.
The offset to all this is that you've discovered it in time, that the operation is behind you and that if the symptoms had been ignored, an early death would have been a certainty.
Feel good, you've both beat it.

    BlackRoses,

Hang in there girl. When I hurt, everyone catches the heck. If I had a buck for everytime I sniped at my wife while I was in pain, we would have already retired by now. That, and I just don't like being in hospitals. Bet it's the same for Larry. When he's well, you'll be doing the 21 year old "make up". Good luck and God bless.

He is getting a physical therapist tomorrow... I told him tonight... oh man did he love that... NOT... He is being stubborn now... wont turn over... wont do his breathing exercises... Remember I posted in here that he had told me not to tell him he was going to hurt after the surgery?... Well tonight he said "Why didnt you tell me it would be so painful... *smack him*... He has to keep moving.. keep turning even if its painful...I know the morphine isnt doing much, but he has to work through the pain... otherwise.. well its more trouble...
I should have the results of the biopsy on the lymph node tomorrow.... hope that is good news... and the stents are working great.. not clogging ...
They are talking of moving him out of ICU sometime tomorrow.... so far its only talk.. no orders given...

Larry hasnt been in the hospital since Vietnam... and his last surgery was a double hernia when he was 8...
I still say women can handle pain so much better than men.....

    Beth,

Make sure Classic hears what Tccox said!

Does Classic like STYX? On their album, "Edge of the Century", they have a song "Not Dead Yet". While I've never had the pain of intestinal surgery, I've found the music and lyrics an effective antidote for lesser pains. While "music therapy for pain management" experiments have focused on "relaxation"--the Styx track would be more a "grit your teeth and growl" approach.

And along that line, you may want play the role of the "strong one" even if you're "feeling sorry" for him. Sometimes we men can be big WEENIES when we're in pain; if a woman reacts to us, saying--not in words, but in "looks"--"Oh my, look at the big wimp!" we react trying to demonstrate that we're NOT whimps. If a woman is "too empathetic" to our pain, it can make us feel "less manly".

I know this might not be easy for you, but sometimes women have to use a little "psychology" on their men.

    Just a thought,

    Joe
