firing guns under water?

I was reading the one of the recent Glock threads... Here's the question... Can all revolvers and autos (using cartridges) be fired under water? I see it happen in movies, but always wondered if the pressure wave in the barrel could cause the barrel to burst.. As far as lack of oxygen during combustion, I guess that's not a problem, and there must be enough within the relatively watertight cartridge... ...I don't know...

There are guns, including Glocks, especially modified for underwater use. Don't ask me how they are modified. This makes me think that "normal" guns are not designed to perform well underwater.

Wouldn't the concussion from the shot damage your eardrums? I heard this someplace.

I have fired many rounds out of an M16 under water with no malfunctions. I was firing blanks and the blank adapter was screwed on the end of the barrel tight.

Smokeeater 38: Yes. Water transfers sound much more efficently than air. There are cartridge based spearguns, but when you fire one the fish clear out of the area. I also have used shark darts based on 38 rounds. When you are forced to use one, your head is spinnig for hours, but it beats the alternative.
And you don't just hear it, you feel in your chest and all over your body.

The U.S.Military modified some Sig Sauer pistols to function under water for the Seal teams. A friend of mine told me it was more the cartridge than the gun.And it was done as a last resort not because of the sound to ear concusion, but because Enemy sonar could pick it up for miles. He says the knife is a Seals best friend on under water missions.

I know the glocks have a special kit you have to install for underwater use. I belive it has vents so water can travel around the firing pin, allowing the action to travel easier. There was some info on the in G&A a few months back. Not 100% sure, not into water all that much.

The plastic firing pin cups are modified by filing a few grooves so water can bypass the cups. The factory will only sell them to LEOs.
