Airport Security Sucks!

As an Asian-American who lived in Israel years back, I have a few things to say about airport security in the U.S. I was spending the year at Tel Aviv University in 1989, as an exchange student. I took a trip to Spain while I was there and on the way back to Ben-Gurion Airport, while waiting with a group of passengers at the airport in Madrid, EL AL personnel waded through the crowd and singled me out to bring my bags to an inspection table. It was incredibly embarrassing. They questioned me, they looked through every inch of my large backpack. Several other passengers, mostly Arabs, were also singled out. I wasn't angry because I was used to getting lots of this kind of attention living in Israel, even as an Asian. Knowing something about Israeli politics and history, it's easy to understood why they were taking so many precautions, even in the relative hylcyon days of the "first" intifada. Looking back, I couldn't imagine this becoming policy with passengers of domestic flights in the U.S. without everyone suing for racial discrimination, even though I think something like what the Israelis do should be done at our airports. I don't know how, but something needs to change. Now we know that the lives of Americans could be at risk.

Last year airport security equipment sniffed out a black plastic "CIA Letter Opener" in my jacket pocket. There was a fuss but they eventually let me board with it.
