range report (Zastava)

Got a Zastava M70 super cheap from buds guns. Was so excited I took it out immediately and didn't even clean it first.

First impressions:

Pros: Accurate, reliable and pleasant to shoot. shot a bit low but not so much as to get worked up about. The safety works and works with or without a round chambered, hammer cocked, and will allow the slide to work even when engaged and even will let you cock the hammer when engaged. Simple and efficient. for a gun with a lot of right angles, ergonomics are surprisingly good.

Cons: one of the mags it came with won't engage the slide stop after the last round is fired. A little heavy, but adds to controlability so this is a wash. The mags don't drop and have to be pulled out but don't "stick" (this may correct after being broken in.)

Biggest complaint: it won't fire without a mag inserted. I hate this feature and will talk to my gunsmith about having it disabled.

All in all, 4.5/5 stars especially for the price ($200).

I bought a pair from J&G in Prescott, AZ. Same price, $200. I also bought an additional six spare mags from them, so each gun has four spares. I've only fired one of them, and I too, found that it shot a bit low. I lowered the front sight a bit, which put it on POA. I also have one of the M57 commercials (.30 Tok), with the same (excellent) safety. On my military M57's, I removed the clutzed-in and unreliable 'aftermarket' safeties altogether, making plugs that are fitted for proper internal clearances.

On the commercial guns with the new slide-mounted safeties, do not disassemble the safeties unless God is on your side [:D]. The firing pins are also a pretty complex piece on these, it would not be easy to make one.

Zastave makes pretty righteous stuff. I want one of their short-action M98's. [:)]

Also bought a Zastava but a M88A in 9mm and am in process of converting it to 7.62x25. This is the baby Tokarev. Zastava quality as good as any T33.
Thanks for advice on not removing the safety. I wanted to smoothen it out but will live with it as is.
The added shot of full size Zastava improves grip.
    A steal at 200.
Tokarevs by any manufacturer can be addicting. Since putting a captured 7.62x25 bullet through a fresh RR tie I became a fan.
Most TT33 parts by any manufacturer interchange.
Removing the mag safety is no big deal. Just remove the left grip and removal is obvious. I'm keeping mine in.
