The local newspaper has enough full page adds for many suppliers every day to indicate to me the markup in hearing aids must be tremendous.

You can get some pretty good buys on E-bay. This is the type I use.

I got some Starkey hearing aids last year. Total cost was $2495, and the batteries last for about 9 days. Very happy with them (as far as hearing aids go). They are the receiver-in-canal type, and cancel out loud noises. I can wear my electronic ear muffs while wearing them, too.

5 years ago I bought a $4600 pair of Phonaks. The real problem is getting them programmed correctly. I don't regret buying them & my only mistake was not buying a pair 15 years earlier. My "new" pair was a gift from a veteran's widow. He received them a year ago from the VA without any specific duty. She tried to return them & they didn't want them back. I had them adjusted for me & they're much better than what I had. My "hearing guy" said they're worth close to $6000. Please, don't be vain. These are the behind the ear type & no one notices them. They are not the same as natural hearing, but we are not in our prime either. Do yourself a favor & consider getting a pair. Yes, they're expensive, but worth every penny & then some.

That's great! I wonder if it would help me?

I lost about 80% of my hearing in '82 (right ear completely dead - except for roaring tinnitus) due to a brain tumor. Since then my hearing has been like a bad drive-in movie speaker (if you remember those.) Not the aid's fault, but just not much hearing ability left.

I have an Oticon now, but have had Widex, Starkey, Phonak and others.

All are good. Which one is "best" depends on your type and severity of hearing loss. My aids have always cost between $1,200 and $1,500, but my hearing is far inferior to someone who is losing it slowly to old age, so you "may" not need one that expensive. I would suggest you not buy one under about $600. Below that they are probably not very good.

I would recommend finding a good Audiologist and getting a hearing test which will tell the hearing aid fitter exactly what you need. Then go from there.

    Good luck.
