What's the Point of Painkillers??

So my "paths" came back positive for melanoma, so I go to the hospital and get a chunk of skin removed that was nearly an inch across and three inches long. Then the skin was stretched back across the muscle and sewed together- the stitches to be removed in two weeks. and after the local wears off, for the "discomfort" I can take 600mg of Tylenol. I don't take much in the way of drugs, but for cutting a fair sized chunk I get a couple Tylenol pills?

Whatever happened to a Percodan for a couple days? It's not like I have a pattern of drug abuse or my insurance couldn't afford a dollar or two for a half dozen pills, for that matter, considering they're generic and cost significantly less than my deductible, I'd be paying for them anyway.

I know, there's a problem with people selling the pills on the black market and there is a problem with people becoming dependent on them; but a couple pills- just until the "discomfort" subsides.

I guess it's like the fellow that carries the luggage- it's really light when someone else carries it- it's really not a problem when someone else is feeling the "discomfort"- what a politically correct term.

The military is addicted, so to speak, to prescribing "Vitamin M", or Motrin.

I've had that prescribed after surgery! Incredible. 800 mg. Didn't do much..., so I "feel your pain", again so to speak.

Doctors are scared of giving pain meds out these days. There are more people hooked on prescriptions pain killers than other drugs.

They say after people stop getting their pain meds they start using heroin and other stuff because heroin is cheaper.

I have been on heavy pain meds for over 5 years. All it does is knock my pain down to a 3 or a 4.[:(]

maybe they didn't anticipate much pain? it's only skin. I know they're careful to prescribe anything you might have an intolerance for.

there was 1 time when I did need pain killers... still didn't use them except "as needed" (which wasn't at all) but when it came time to need them hoo boy I needed them... some sort of pseudo-narcotics, 1 pill made you nauseated and sleepy, 2 pills put you to sleep, all pain vanishes and you drift off with happy bubbly thoughts... they sure worked.

those, you didn't get "high" off of, in fact you were either nauseated or asleep. couldn't see any demand for them at all on a black market. whoever formulated those painkillers knew what they were doing.

If the pain is so intense, call the doc tomorrow for something stronger......and here I always thought you were a "tuff guy"[;)]

Sometimes you have to be assertive. I don't think that any of us can advise you the best painkiller to request; as long as you have no medical contra-indications, your doctor should be willing to give you something stronger than OTC meds. Discuss it with him. If you aren't happy with his response, find another doctor.

Tylenol is good. For eating your liver up,that's about it.
You would benefit more from plain Aspirin.

I took a lot of Vicodin (before and after hip replacement) for about a year. When I stopped , I was only taking one big one per day.
I was using a little alcohol in the evenings, and didn't want the codeine to add to it.

when I stopped, I HAD A FEW WEEKS OF HELL. I made it through, and now have a rx for it, but I'm scared to death to go through the withdrawal again.

That sounds like what I went through!

9 Months of Percocet's to ease the pain, and two weeks of pure hell to quit them. And I was using the bare minimum.

Last week I had a toothache that was so bad I found some of the old stash left over. I took 1/2 of one and it worked.

Then I went down and bought a fifth of Whisky, swirled it around, and now I bought some time to find a Dentist that's worth a Crap!

The surgery on my arm is similar to a sunburn as far as pain goes- it's this dull thud during the day but when I lay down for sleep, it gets a lot of attention. So, it would have been nice to have a doctor prescribed medication (which for me, history has shown I use it one to two nights, then I'm back to normal), now I get to self-medicate. Not wanting to misuse good Tennessee/Kentucky 100 proof, I'm opting for some flavorless Vodka and Diet Caffeine Free Dr Pepper. I figure two ounces will be enough for me to get to sleep, then the "discomfort" hopefully won't be enough to wake me after the two hours it takes for the alcohol to metabolize, but if it does, then I repeat.

Appears we've taken a giant step back about 200 years to the time before morphine when alcohol was the main pain medicine. Ain't Allah'bama care grand??

With my pain prescriptions i just had to call my doctor and tell her i was running out of morphine and oxycodone and she would write my prescription for me.

I would go to the front desk and pick it up. I would have to do that every month. I see her every 3 months.

Now i go to a pain clinic and i have to go to them every month. She will write my prescriptions then. I can not go to any other doctor for pain medicine. If i need more or something i just call the pain clinic.

My neck surgeon said I was going to have "discomfort" after my surgery in April. When the muscle spasms hit on day two I puked and peed myself from the pain. If the guy considers that "discomfort" I would hate to see what he calls PAIN.

Call and get some percs from your doc or just go to the local street corner where the entrepreneurial pharmacist works; he sells them wholesale with no sales tax. [:0][:p][;)]

Thinking about this- it isn't the pain, which now would be classified as a "discomfort", but what bothers me is that it is a repetition of society and our governments method of punishing everyone for the problems of a few. Reminds me of an uncle that had six kids. whenever any of them did anything wrong, all got punished- I guess the idea being that the five innocent ones would punish the guilty one afterward. So I go in the military- same thing; one guy screws-up, everyone is doing exercises. Now, a few misuse a particular kind of gun, drug, alcohol (matter later corrected); or over use something like water and electricity, or even generation of trash- guess what, everyone pays. Guns and drugs are banned or regulated beyond their desired use. The government requires cars be made in a certain way- not to improve their use, but to prevent some user from misusing it.

That's what aggravates me about doctors not being able to prescribe a drug for a specific situation- because some loser politician is trying to keep me from injuring myself. How about the loser goes back under his rock and let me do what I know is best for me.

I had shoulder surgery about 10 years ago for bone spurs. They gave me oxycodone and I found out I was allergic to it the first time I took it. I iron manned it for a week on over the counter stuff, not fun but I made it.Dave

I'm on Vicodan 2-3 pills daily.
They address back issues from 4 operations but don't seem to have other negative effects other than having to take Mirolax daily.
I'm lucky there's a pill that works on the toe and back pain.
Next month a spinal guru will review yesterdays' MRI with contrast data to see if anything more can be done.
