Carcano round 4

I continue to play with the 7.35 Carcano using my new .300 mould. Problem: the sizing dies size for a .298 bullet. Therefore a bit of lead is shaved off every time I seat, resulting in little shards of lead overlapping the case neck like a skirt, or flaking off, or impregnating themselves on the brass... after a few shots this starts to interfere with proper chambering (headspace must be excellant if a thousandth of an inch of lead shaving on the shoulder messes it up)... so how to seat the bullet without deforming it? The solution I came up with is as follows. After the case has been deprimed and reprimed, I just started to feed it into a 30/40 resizer die to open up the neck a bit. I got the idea when I was flaring a pistol case to accept a bullet. I then charge the case and seat the bullet. At this stage a blank I loaded wouldn't chamber (no surprise with the neck opened up for the last 32nd of an inch or so)... so what to do now? A crimp die would be ideal but I have none in this caliber sooo... out came the expander rod from the 7.35 sizer die. I then smeared a small bit of Lee lube on each case neck and fed the loaded round into the sizer die until just the neck area was sized. Voila! Perfectly loaded, neck sized rounds, with no lead shards protruding! A blank loaded up thusly chamber great! I hope this solves my accuracy and chambering problems as I am finally starting to tire of this project.

ah the infamous "carcano update"...i hope it never ends, as it is a tribute to man's tenacity in the face of italian egineering. when it does end, i think you should put it up for auction so that some lucky soul may inherit your golden burden...
