Back in the early 80's there was a book published titled "Above and Beyond" covers all CMH winners in the back but has some very good stories inside. Knew 2 of them personally. Archie Van Winkle (won his in Korea)and Jimmie Howard (won his in Vietnam). The only ones not in the book are the 2 that were awarded in Somalia.

That should be a one term required class tied in with American History, or at least a required reading asignment for highschool kids

Thank you Rembrant. I knew Oscar Johnson when I was younger. Knew he won the Medal but he would just make lite of it and never explain how he came by it. He was a very unassuming, quiet man but by accounts he had a lot to be proud of. Thanks again...

this is great reading, ive had it saved for a couple of years now...

BTW, there is no such award named the "Congressional Medal of Honor"
its simple "the medal of honor"

There seemes to have been a lot of CMH's awarded during the Civil War. Maybe the accounts were understated because they didnt seem to measure up to WW2 and Korea accounts. Many sounded like Bronze Star material.
    A must read.
