The Pedersoli Kentucky rifle is a good rifle for the money but if you are not on a tight budget, there are better custom KY rifles out there for under $1000. Also a lot depends on what you want, plain Jane or fancy. Remember fancy does not shoot better! I have a custom 45 cal. Bedford County that would be concidered a KY rifle. The KY rifle is in fact a Penn. Longrifle just renamed due to the fact they were most prevalent on the KY frontier. They do make excellent deer rifles and I do hunt with mine when I can pry it from my youngest teenager's hands. Other wise I use a smooth bore flinter. I do get to squirrel hunt with it being he does not squirrel hunt much! If you do want to spend a little more for a custom let me know and I will post some custom gun makers URLs. Also from what I noticed at Friendship IN this spring, custom rifles have droped by about 1/3 in price! The advantage to a custom is you get the right pull length for you and you can get it in a wide variety of calibers, anything between 32 to 62 rifled! If you do decide on a custom then you can make it a plain as you want it or as fancy as you want. My 45 Bedford flinter would sell new for in the area of $1000 +/- $200. All depends on who is the maker. Sometimes you pay extra for a gun by a name brand maker yet a maker that is not so well known might do better work. One person I would recomend is Terry McClean. If you need his e-mail address let me know. Some other good makers are Jackie Brown, Tenn. Valley Arms, and the House brother but the House brothers would be REAL expensive! Also there is a really good gun builder at Fort Boonesbourgh State Park In KY. You can get their number off the KY State Park web site. Also check out Dixie Gun Works at their web site at dixiegunworks.com
Hope this helps, and if you are interested in a used one in caplock, there is a member on this board with one for sale.

Check with Track of the Wolf at www.trackofthewolf.com. They mainly carry "kits" but frequently have completed rifles. Worth a look and a great source for everything else. Jim

Rhonda, glad you posted Track of the Wolf for mdcac, it was one I forgot. Also mdcac you can access the NMLRA site to get other custom gun makers and the Tenn. Valley is actually Tenn. Valley Muzloaders not arms. Their kits start at 550 with finished guns for 850.

thanks for the info. i am on a budget so spending 800 on a smoke pole kinda hurts. i still my go with cheaper ones just to give them a try. i wouldn't want to be running around in the woods with nice pretty one anyways.
    thanks
