I have been experimenting with building the 30-378 as my next rifle. Anybody have anything good or bad to say about this caliber. I understand they are partial to throat erosion, but I can always re-barrel it. 700 rem mag action/H&S or McMillian stock/jewell trigger/ hart or pacnor or lilja barrel./nightforce 42x.

Grandfather of the .308 Baer, 30 Rem Ultra Mag, 7.21 Laz Warbird. A wildcat LR/BR till given birth by Weatherby. As to the "erosion" that's speculation caused more by mismatched components, poor workmanship than anything.Example, take a "family car" stick in a Corvette engine, now would you expect it to preform just like a 'Vette? No! But (butt) people do that with firearms.Accuracy better than Ultra Mag, and Lazz's,..Pleasant to shoot...IF...set up right, ie.. correct stock, stock design, optical mounting system, correct "scope eye" alignment all very important too comfort.Norma brass is the most consistent brass in volume & dimensions( Stock Weatherby brass is Norma).HS/Mac good choices-look at semi beavertail if a hunting combo rig, flat if a BR gun.Aluminun insert a must to stiffen stock.Monte Carlo, with a double drop (Wby style) is the best shape for many reasons. Do not get a straight stock unless you want "slap".Barrels all good choices, get "air guage" premium by any one. Lilja has the edge, but I find most guys can't outshoot the rig.For now.
