2 Miami-Dade firefighters refuse to ride on truck with American flagASSOCIATED PRESS Posted September 19 2001 MIAMI-- Two Miami-Dade County firefighters refused to ride on a fire engine carrying the American flag, saying Old Glory was offensive, officials said Wednesday.The two firefighters, one an engine driver and the other a firefighter, showed up for work Saturday morning, saw the flag on the truck and refused to ride, telling crew members that the flag represented oppression, said Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue spokesman Lt. Louie Fernandez. The crew chief then ordered the flag's removal so that the seven-member unit could answer 911 calls, Fernandez said.``He (the crew chief) felt the best thing to do was for the administration to deal with this later,'' Fernandez said. ``This way, citizens were never affected as far as their fire and rescue service.''Fernandez declined to identify the two firefighters, who work at Station 26 in Opa-locka, a small town in north Miami-Dade County. He said they have been on scheduled leave since Saturday but will return to work Monday.``We're getting statements from all the firefighters involved,'' Fernandez said.On Monday, Miami-Dade Fire Chief Dave Paulison ordered all county fire engines to carry the American flag in honor of the firefighters and police officers killed in New York in last week's terrorist attacks.Fernandez said if the two firefighters refuse to ride when they return to work, they ``will be met with severe discipline.''``I've had more than 100 phone calls from firefighters around the county who are appalled at this report,'' Fernandez said. ``We lost 400 colleagues in New York. This is our way of expressing sympathy.''

    Send those two a$$holes packing. That is beyond ridiculous. I knew it was only a matter of time before someone came out of the woodwork to say the American flag was offensive. If you don't like it, get the hell out.

    Another story I heard on the radio talked about a college library that would not allow it's employees to wear "proud to be American" buttons. Apparently, they are afraid of making exchange students feel uncomfortable. This is probably the biggest pile of bullsh$t I've heard of yet. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE WAY AMERICANS ACT, GET THE FU** OUT OF AMERICA!! Makes me want to head down to whatever school that this is happening and JUMP in the face of whoever it was that made that decision.PROUD TO BE AMERICAN!

    Mrs. Mudge heard the same report about the "Proud to be an American" buttons.Sorry, I would have worn the button anyway and prayed somebody said something about it to my face. How ridiculous can it get? What the hell is happening to our First Amendment rights? We've become such a "touchy-feely" society that we're afraid of "offending" other people by simply stating an opinion.Whatever happened to "I may disagree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it"?Mudge

    Fire 'em. Today.I was at a benefit basketball game where the Harlem something or other, not the Globetrotters, were playing the local PD. At the start of the game, the National Anthem was played. The players were already on the court. Everyone stood. Everyone saluted and everyone sang along, except for two of the Harlem whatchacallits, who just stood there with disgusted looks on their faces, one of them holding a basketball at his side. They didn't even stand still. I was so disgusted I left.

    I don't have a problem with the Flag offending them. It's their right. Now they can get the h#!! out of the country so they don't have to be offended. I'd be glad to help them, too.

    Let them commute daily from Afganistan and get their pay in Afganistan dollars. If they don't like the symbolism of theAmerican flag MAKE them leave. If they are American citizens they have a serious problem.

    Mom-Mom, when I went to school, we learned the Pledge of Alligance as....."one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty, and justice for all".My kids don't seem to remember using the word "indivisile". Unfortunately.God Bless America.
