PORNO? VIRUS?

Last night I got my first porno e-mail (I think) It said something like,"Take a look at this incredible adult site"
http://xxxxxxxxxxxx
What is it and how would someone like that get my address? I have never ever looked at a site like that. I'm scared to open it because it may be a virus.

Deleted it but I have been on the net for several years and never got a porno thingy before. I am no prude and I like women more than most, (I have been married twice and have six kids) but I cannot understand why anyone would want to look at that stuff. Hell, all a man has to do is ask his wife or girl friend in a nice way and he can see AND touch! At one time I did some traveling for the company I work for and at times with some of the other executives and with out fail they would want to go to what they called a topless bar. I always refused and stayed in my hotel with a book or tv and called my wife. Stick in the mud? YOU BETTCHA!!

Once it starts, it can be tough to get rid of. Start using your e-mail "rules" and have it send anything with words like porn, xxx, and so forth directly to your Deleted folder. Nobody I know has found perfect spam filtering that catches all of this stuff, particularly because these people have no shame when it comes to their subject lines. They'll type anything they think will get by a spam filter, and they have robots that make up email addresses and send to literally every combination of names imaginable. I hear that putting a _ or other non-letter character in your email address can reduce the likelihood of robot spam finding you, but I don't know... I just keep increasing my spam filtering stuff.

You know, what has been said is true. All because I had too much time and beer on my hands in college, I checked out a few adult sights and I still am buried in Spam email, years later, advertising bust enhancers, penile enhancers, free passwords, etc. Too bad I can't get an email enhancer that trashes it all. Oh, and in my own defense- I did manage to graduate with a perfect 4.0 cumulative.

Here is a link to what several experts have said is the best free firewall program:
    .http://www.zonelabs.com/store/application?namespace=zls_main&origin=global.jsp&event=link.catalogHome&&zl_catalog_view_id=201

If you use office 2000, and you get an email from somene you don't wish to recieve emails from again, you can go to organize, and make a rule that all emails that orginate from there go directly to the deleted items.

Rosie, some of the spam is auto-generated, with a nice little piece of software sending out the message to every iteration of an address it can possibly produce. Another possibility is a 'bot,' a wonderful little application that scours the net looking for something. Many of these spam artists have ones designed to seek out email addresses. As those who've communicated with me off forum know, I have a 'throwaway' adddress I use when I must post my email in a public place. 95% of the email that comes in to that account is pure trash. I don't post my regular email anywhere and I have several filter applications on it, which allows me to view & delete messages while they are still in the ISP's storage and not even give them the satisfaction of reaching my sys. A real good application for this (IMHO) is a program called, aptly, "Spam Killer." You can also find anonymous address ISPs which will disguise your real address / location if you choose. These precautions take a little time and effort, but not much, and the result is much happier computing. Good firewall and antivirus programs are also a must.

Nunn, I like what Chuck Swindoll once said about available women when he was traveling, "Why have hamburger, when he has filet mignon at home".

ComPHEWter was once bombarded, one after another by casino, and porno ads. I was having fun "x'ing" them out as fast as they came in.
Till the screen froze, showing of all things, a baseball bat in a very private female spot. Sick, sick, perverted mind warp.

Called Dell, they really helped. Increased Internet Security Level which at times messes up MSN/Internet Explorer, but much less Spam, and junk in my In Box.

Dell tech said that spammers, and ad companies earn a penny for every 'hit'. Systems are automatic, running 27/7/365,....world wide.
They can make thousands of $$$$ a day. Somehow, they get a company's mailing list, or address of a comPHEWter when visiting a web site (not porn).

MSN sympathized with me, and was 'trying to be helpful', but they get $$$ from those advertisers. That's when I called Dell.
So they speak out of both sides of they're bank account.

Found that "blocking senders" also helps.

You don't need a spam killer merely to block senders. There are mail rules for that in Outlook Express and I assume in Netscape's email client as well. Trouble is, the bots make up a different address every time, it seems. It takes a combination of efforts, and a Spam Killer (either the one your ISP provides or one on your home computer or both) helps. But also, learn to use the Mail Rules in Outlook Express and you can dump to your Deleted folder anything with a subject of no interest in it. My list of subjects going straight to the trash bin is still growing, but currently includes:

'Spam' or 'Loan' or 'Mortgage' or '*' or '*' or 'XXX' or 'Casino' or 'Hot Deal' or 'Red Hot' or 'Debt' or 'Adv:' or 'credit' or 'real estate' or 'free trial' or 'street fight' or 'chick' or 'orgasm' or 'who are you ?' or 'see me' or 'while you sleep' or 'lose weight' or 'street fighting' or 'Automated Shopping Mall' or 'meds online' or 'breast' or 'everything your spouse does' or 'increase your sexual' or 'as seen on' or 'copy any DVD' or 'porn' or 'Find out what your spouse' or 'secretly record' or 'your spouse'

    Offeror, and other posters:

Appreciate your input on this, and especially on the 'Digital Camera'.
I do like what my comPHEWter can do, when....it does it.

I expect more of the companies support services when I need them relative to their expertise, and NOT blaming things on the other guys equipment, or software. Tough to feel, "Your in good hands" when you hear them flipping pages right away.

Have learned & understood more reading posts on GB. Thanks.

MSN has a service now called Inbox Guardian that is supposed to automatically stow spam in a separate folder and get rid of it. They graciously give you an email address so that you can forward to them a copy of every piece of missed-spam you receive. I have done a lot of forwarding the last few days. I don't know what they do with it, but it will be interesting to see if the duns for loans, mortgages, weight loss, spouse spying cameras, e-books with eBay secrets, work at home schemes, and all the other junk abate. Supposedly I have "opted-in" somewhere along the line. Well, I'm opting out because it's ridiculous. At this rate, I would eventually have to change my e-mail for a fresh start.

Speaking of which, I just successfully installed Norton Firewall. It's the first of the firewalls I've looked at that was actually easy to run (through a Wizard) and set up. The only problem is, now every time I post to gunbroker, it won't let me refresh the page of posts. I haven't figured out what to disable to get it to work the way it used to -- yet. So every time I post I have to use the Back button to return to the General Discussion list. Oh well. Norton tells me my computer is now well protected when I'm online. But only from viruses, hackers and maybe cookies -- not from spam.

Norton vs Millenium has some compatibility issues. On the second last ME update, they got into an electronic battle....inside my comPHEWter. Screwed up for days.

ME blamed it on Dell, Dell Net(MSN), other software, etc., etc.
Finally on a Norton supported forum like GB's some guy wrote an article about it. When I did what he said, "Poof", most problems.

Now, I'm back to watching the pretty lights flash as I hit the keys.
