Okay, why did the last guy bid up to $795 when he was unchallenged on $600?

It must have been a reserve price auction. And he did a proxy bid that was higher then the reserve.By his willingness to pay over the reserve price and no one else bidding, his closing bid was the reserve price.

He was just trying to meet the reserve. No wrong wtih that if your willing to pay the price.

What I see is perfectly normal. The bidder just met the reserve, that's all.He had bid $600 and did not meet the reserve. He bid again an amount greater than $795, and autobid entered $795, the apparent reserve. There is no price fixing that I can see. It looks to me as if the buyer wants the gun.But it does bring up a valid point about reserve auctions. Lots of people don't understand how it works, and when they see bid histories like this, they get suspicious.

Speaking just for myself, I **HATE** reserve auctions and usually will not even enter a bid in one. I figure the seller either: (a) doesn't know what his goods are worth and wants to test the waters first; (b) wants the sky+50% and doesn't want to make his greed so obvious; or (c) wants to screw the site out of the fees & completes the deal off line - possibly a combination of two or all of these. There are sellers who list reserve auctions for the same items continuously w/o a bid, and when they do get a reasonable bid, guess what? The bidder hasn't met reserve. These are the same clowns who list stuff for 10+% over normal retail for months on end. They just take up bandwidth, IMHO.

I don't like reserve auctions either. And I think the sellers never bother to read the 'How do I sell?' page. It specificly says that buyers don't like reserve auctions and if you're going to do it then start at 1/2 the reserve.

Here's what I do; Put the minimum I will take for the item as the starting price. that way if I only get one dang bid, I get what I wanted as does the buyer with no riff raff. I have only sold a couple of items and have only been rated on one. I do what any good bussiness man would do, sell the damn thing to someone who wants it and make sure he gets a square deal because, satisfied customers tell their friends, dissatisfied customers tell everybody.Still on a rampage, ain't I?

Thanx for setting me streight....but after seeing what others say about reserve pricing, that sounds kinda like price fixing too?!?

Iconoclast....I'm with you. I've bid on "reserve auctions" but not anymore. The only two I bid on, I bid what I'd be willing to pay. Didn't meet the reserve....BUT....after the auction closed, in both instances, the seller contacted me to say: "You're so close to my reserve price. Would you like to bring your offer up to meet it?" To which I replied: "Your reserve price is so close to what I'm willing to pay. Would you like to bring your price down to meet it?". Didn't get a reply from either.Mudge

And he should bring his price down for a side deal. After all the seller is avoiding the GB charge.

I feel the same as everyone else about reserve auctions for the very good reasons stated previously. If we all refuse to bid in reserve auctions, they will go away.I prefer to have a dealer list the starting price as the min. he needs. If he just has to get $675 for a $475 rifle, good luck to him, but I won't waste time for either of us with useless bids.
