A hernia is a condition in which part of the intestine bulges through a weak area in muscles in the abdomen. An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin (the area between the abdomen and thigh). It is called "inguinal" because the intestines push through a weak spot in the inguinal canal, which is a triangle-shaped opening between layers of abdominal muscle near the groin. Obesity, pregnancy, heavy lifting, and straining to pass stool can cause the intestine to push against the inguinal canal.

Symptoms of inguinal hernia may include a lump in the groin near the thigh; pain in the groin; and, in severe cases, partial or complete blockage of the intestine. The doctor diagnoses hernia by doing a physical exam and by taking x rays and blood tests to check for blockage in the intestine.

The main treatment for inguinal hernia is surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall. This surgery is called herniorrhaphy. Sometimes the weak area is reinforced with steel mesh or wire. This operation is called hernioplasty. If the protruding intestine becomes twisted or traps stool, part of the intestine might need to be removed. This surgery is called bowel resection.

    BlackRoses,
Do you work in the medical field? I was about to answer 'cause I'm studying but I'm not even into the actual Nursing classes yet! You're just too cool!

I have had 6 of them fixed in the last 7 years. Have a scar from my sternum to below the navel. Keep getting hernias on it. I have 2 of them right now. If they start hurting I will go in.

I have never had steel mesh put it but another kind of mesh that is absorbed after the muscles grow together.

I had one that was surgically corrected several years ago (inguinal, BlackRoses ). I swear I had NO IDEA how often I used the muscles in that area (to cough, move, even BREATH) until I was recovering.

As long as you're going to the doctor you'll be just fine...

CAUTION, this is not without risk. I have had two hernias and the last operation left me numb in the groin area, yes, the whole groin area. It can really mess up your love life. When I told the doctor about it, I got a blank stare and he said he had never heard of such a thing. Apparently this is not all that rare since I have an uncle who told me the same thing happened to him. Ask your doctor if he knows what the inguinal nerve is and where it is and how to repair any damage he does to it. Tom
