Internet 101

*****Internet 101*****The Internet is a worldwide collection of connected (Networked) computers. Each Web site on the Internet has a unique address, such as www.Microsoft.com. Web sites use one or more Internet connected computers (Called Servers) to store (Host) its pages and files. Each server has a unique address, commonly called an IP address. When you attempt to access a web page, your computer uses the name you provide (www.Microsoft.com) to look up the physical address of the Server which hosts the initial page of that web site. All images, links and files are tied to a URL (Universal Resource Locator), the constant physical location of a file. If the server hosting that file or image cannot be reached or is not running, the page will return an error. In the case of pictures it will return a box with an X in it. Therefore, to display a picture or file and allow others access to it, you must copy that file to an Internet server and then provide the path to that file, on that server. For example, http://www.GunGurrrrls.com/images/GunGirl.gif means get "GunGirl.Gif" from this computer "www.GunGirls.com" in this directory "images". You can't just post a picture from your home PC. Why? Because your computer would need to be active 24-7, have an Internet Server application running and be registered as a valid web site. Besides how is my computer supposed to know that your "C:\BigBadGun.Jpg" refers to Jimmy Joe Johnson's computer in Freepark, Idaho? If you want a real web guru try llamas1...

Sure Bob,Take everything I've say here with a grain of salt, I'm definitely not an authority just a casual student.Your basic computer can do all sorts of great stuff. Anything from writing a book, to checking your grammar, to playing video games, but the true power of the personal computer shines through in information exchange. This is called networking. A network can be as simple as two computers connected to each end of a cable or as complex as the World Wide Web. Anytime you allow one computer to communicate with another you are networking. Computers use several languages but the most common is TCP/IP. TCP/IP stands for Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. Simply put, its just a set of rules on how to pass and receive data, but other than knowing it exists you don't have to anything else about it. When you use your computer to call Ao-Hell, Prodigy, Msn, etc you are linking your machine into a network. Since your computer will be sending and receiving data, there has to be a UNIQUE way to identify your specific computer. This is VERY important. You wouldn't want to place a credit card order and have it sent to the wrong person would you? After you establish a network connection your computer is uniquely identified with 4, 1 to 3 digit numbers called an IP address. Here is an example of a valid IP address "205.128.10.30". With many dialup services like AOL this number changes every time you reconnect. With direct connections such as T1, Cable, and DSN this number may stay the same. If you were to commit some type of crime on the internet this is how they would find you. The first few digits give them your internet provider and the last few digits are linked directly to your logon username. So now your computer is connected to the internet can people see your photos? Nope not yet. You also need the software which tells your computer how to handle incoming requests from the internet. The most common software is Microsoft Internet Information Server. The Information Server creates folders for storing your internet available material, much like the folders on your hard drive. You put the files you want to share in the appropriate folders. Now you may post the path to your picture. It would probably look something like this http://205.128.10.30/images/FTHLogo170x120.gif. The problem is, that if you close the Information Server program, or turn off your computer no one will be able to see your picture. The other alternative is to use someone else's server to host your picture. There used to be a many free internet hosting services but the free ones have become almost nonexistent. If you find a host, all you have to do is upload your picture and paste the path for someone to view it.If you need a picture posted email it to thesupermonkey@hotmail.com and I'll put it on my site if I can remember how 
