Crystal City, VA

Looks like I will be flying there for some training in late Aug. Does anyone have any knowledge as far as sights to see, places to go, places to avoid, etc... I will not have great amounts of time but I want to take in as much scenery as possible. I have not been in the DC area since '85. I don't know if I will be flying into Dulles or Reagan at this time. I am taking my wife with me.

Thanks for any input.

Type in Crystal City, Va in the google search.. lists pages of things to see or do, even lists best restaurants,... works great if no one has been there to comment on it

Basically Crystal City is an office complex. You are just across the Potomac River from the DC Mall area, sandwiched between the Pentagon and Regan National Airport. Night life will be happy hour after work at the bars situated in some of the office buildings. If you don't mind a short taxi ride Old town Alexandria is nicer with better restaurants and historic places to visit such as the Torpedo Factory, a local arts and crafts hall. You will be just acros the river from Washington DC and all of it's sights and things to do.

If you have a rental car don't forget the NRA Museum and headquarters just off of I66 in Fairfax. I second the thoughts on Old Town Alexandria, Mt. Vernon, and too many other historical sites to mention. If you have never been there a short drive to the Luray Caverns in Luray, VA is interesting. Most of us other Virginians try to disavow the 'State of Northern Virginia" as being part of the Commonwealth though.

We will be there August 19-23 or so, my BinLAW suggested we stay at Crystal City. We have reservations in Arlington. Bought the book "the un-official guide to Washington DC" seems to be pretty informative.

Maybe we can hook up for the NRA tour...

It'll be nice and cool at the end of August, probably around
72 degrees with low humidity and a nice breeze. Hah! Old
Town Alexandria is very nice, as is Mt. Vernon. I'd make sure
to do the Smithsonian, and the National Archives is very cool.
Bring your out of state driver's license and you can get a
good rate on a metro farecard. Parking in DC is nonexistent
and the taxi fare system takes a Phd to figure out, so I'd
just hop on the metro. If you're down for some wildness,
Madam's Organ in Adam's Morgan has good bluegrass and blues
and a fun crowd. I'd sort of stay out of Southeast DC.

Thanks for all of the replies and ideas, I appreciate it. The NRA tour sounds great but I will not be there until Aug 26th.

I have also done the searches but I wanted people's personal opinions and experiences also.

    Once again, thanks
