Favorite Western Movie

I was just about to ask this, then I scrolled down and saw the favorite western series post. I recently have gotten into watching Western movies (I'm 21 so almost all the classics were made well before my time). So far I've watched High Noon (my favorite so far); The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; Unforgiven; and just got done watching Tombstone. I own the rest of the Man With No Name movies, Silverado, and Rio Bravo, just haven't gotten around to watching them yet. Anybody got any favorites?

All time #1 is Lonesome Dove. The movie and the book are both excellent.

Carbineking, you started out with some good ones. All would make my top 10. Try a couple of westerns with "The Duke" -- John Wayne. Maybe The Searchers, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Bravo, True Grit, The War Wagon. Then see The Shootist as the finale.

Movie Trivia: Did you know that High Noon was considered at the time an allegory against the McCarthy hearings and the blacklisting of many left-wing Hollywood writers and actors?

My all-time favorite, Once Upon A Time In The West. I've probably seen it 20 times. Watch it everytime it's on TV.

Watch SHANE and PALERIDER back to back. Same story different people. SHANE is one of the greatest!

I always thought that Pale Rider and High Plains Drifter were pretty much the same film!

For comedy relief, hard to beat Blazing Saddles. "Where's all the white women?", "The Sheriff's a ....", "That's HEADLY Lamarr!", so many great lines.

I agree about Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Then there is a lesser known great Western called THE PROFESSIONALS with, I believe, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, etc. Treat yourself. While you're at it, THE WILD BUNCH is still a great one. If you can stand black & white movies, and apparently you can, I'd try Paul Newman in THE LEFT-HANDED GUN and Marlon Brando in VIVA ZAPATA. The other two good Sergio Leone Westerns with Eastwood are FISTFUL OF DOLLARS and FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, and both are fun. As for GREAT Westerns, gee, DUEL IN THE SUN, THE FAR COUNTRY, GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL, SHANE, THE SEARCHERS, THE MAGNIFICENT 7, I mean there are a lot of them. You've got quite a summer ahead at this rate.

I accidentally double-posted so I'll change this one. The three best Western comedies in my opinion are TEXAS ACROSS THE RIVER, BLAZING SADDLES, and that one with Arnold Swarzenegger whose title I forget. So if you need relief from all that macho, try dropping in one of these. TEXAS ACROSS THE RIVER is a certified classic. "Aroar, Har!!"

Almost forgot about "Missouri Breaks", with Jack Nicholson, Marlin Brando, and Lee Marvin, and "Goin' South", with Nicholson, and John Belushi as a Mexican bandito.

    E. Williams --
The one you and I are both thinking of is THE VILLAIN, with Kirk Douglas and Arnold Swarzenegger and I think Ann Margaret. It is hilarious like a Road Runner cartoon. Here's a view from Amazon.com:

Got to be "The Searchers," or "Big Jake" with the Duke. Theme is the same: Dropping everything and moving Heaven and earth to rescue a loved one.

Come to think of it, "Shenandoah," with Jimmy Steward as the patriarch had the same theme.

All in all, I'll take "Big Jake."

"Sorry, Mister McCandles. I thought you was dead."

    "Not hardly."

I wondered how long it would take media groups like Turner Classic Movies to begin treating THE SEARCHERS as a problem of political correctness. Well, yesterday it happened. The showing of THE SEARCHERS was followed by the "American Indians' side of the story," the movie GERONIMO starring Chuck Connors, which depicts a small group of Apache warriors, wives and children who go into the hills and "declare war" on the American government over a broken land treaty and disrespectful treatment. Chuck gets to give a speech that would be music to the ears of terrorists -- the gist of which is that while declaring war on the whole United States may seem futile, the desperate effort may get people to understand that every "people" deserves to be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. Rings pretty hollow with suicide bombings going on and various plots for killing innocent citizens being foiled almost daily. My guess is you will seldom see THE SEARCHERS on cable again without accompanying films that take the Indians' point of view.

Got to agree with Lowrider, about Once Upon a Time in the West, just saw it again a couple of nites ago. Only time I ever saw Henry Fonda play the bad guy. Jason Robards and Bronson were great also. Second is the Wild Bunch, there has to be a whole village of dead Mexicans somewhere. One of the most realistic shoot out scenes ever. Third is just about anything with John Wayne, but especially the Shootist. And fourth, Quigley Down Under, but some of the shots would be stretching it in real life.

Too many to list, but I believe The Wild Bunch would
    be my favorite.
Magnificent Seven, Shane, any John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper,
    etc.
Like I said, too many to list!!!!!

I can't remeber the title but it was with Randolph Scott and he and another guy were hired to guard a load of gold as it came down from a miners camp. It was one of his last films.
