Voting ballots in spanish; Heard about this on the radio the other day congress wants to vote making it law that all voting ballots be in english. ( All republican senators support the law from what I understood )

Common Sense dictates that this need not be in law. Americans speak english, Anyone that doesnt speak english probably is'nt an American.

We're all used to D.C. wiping on fine parchment, but when local leaders do it, well that is when the stink really smells.

ARGHHH

the drum marches on!

The law should be that official documents/tests/applications and so forth be in English, only.

    This is, or was America.

One of the cities in my area is trying to get things to go the other way. The city wants to charge for the translators. They say it cost the city about $3 a min and they are going to start billing the people that use the service. They say it is the same as anything else through the city like water, septic, trash it is a service that is not free. I hope it passes and things spread.

Can't we just KILL all the non-english speaking people on earth. Seems like we could save a lot of trees by not printing stuff in so many languages.

Just make English the OFFICIAL language. Outlaw all the advertising in Spanish. Driving through Houston, you would think you were in Mexico or some other Spanish speaking country. Either learn the language or go back to your country of origin.

From what I hear, you would be well-served to learn Spanish. Why? Because, in a very short time you will be a minority. As an aside; It appears that a great percentage of the ones complaining about another language being spoken here are not fluent in the English language themselves (as evidenced in many posts on this forum). Think about it.[:)]

FWIW: Languages in the United States
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Begin Quote

Although the United States has no official language, it's largely monolingual with English being the de facto official language. It's spoken by about 82 percent of the population as a native language and nearly everyone as a daily language. There also have been moves in the past to make English the official language of the United States, but so far, this has been just a minor political issue.

Approximately 336 languages are spoken by the population (spoken or signed) of which 176 are indigenous to the area. 52 languages formerly spoken in the country's territory are now extinct (Grimes 2000).

Spanish is taught as a second language to some extent, especially in areas with large Hispanic populations such as the states which border Mexico, as well as Florida and New York. Younger generations of non-Hispanics seem to be learning Spanish in larger numbers, thanks to the growing Hispanic population and increasing popularity of Latin American movies and music performed in the Spanish language. Over 30 million Americans, roughly 12% of the population, speak Spanish, making the U.S. the fifth largest Spanish speaking population in the world after Mexico, Colombia, Spain, and Argentina.

Chinese, mostly of the Cantonese dialect, is the third largest language spoken in the United States, almost completely spoken within Chinese-American populations and by immigrants or the descendants of immigrants, especially in California. Many young Americans not of Chinese descent have become interested in learning the language (mostly due to a perception of increased business opportunities available in China's growing economy), though it is the Mandarin dialect that is mostly taught. Over 2 million Americans speak Chinese dialects.

I would like to know WHY this is even an ISSUE???

If you can't speak English well enough you shouldn't be able to become a naturalized citizen, right? Isn't that part of the testing?
Since only citizens can vote, it makes bilingual voting a moot point.

BTW. I sometimes click "Espanol" on the selfcheckout at teh grocery store, simply because I am tired of a clanker (computer) treating me like a child with its instructions [:D]

Actually, it's a Federal law which mandates that if a certain percentage of a Legislative District speaks a second language, then ballots must include that language. The law was intended to counter all the Jim Crow laws that segregated blacks from whites, which kept blacks from voting.
Many States have similar, parallel laws for State-wide decisions, as do local jurisdictions.
We are a nation of many colors, nationalities and customs---who be it for the majority to start stepping on the necks of his neighbor? Some say "Majority Rules," but if that were the case, then black slavery would still exists, women would not have a vote and civil rights would be non-existent.
If you really want to live in such a monocultural society, move to Iran---they are pretty-much exclusive.

With the schools being "slowed down" in normal education in the past
years to "accomodate" non english speakimg students, is it any wonder
some are not FLUENT in english and other subjects taught in public schools ??? And now it looks like we will have 12,000,000 more to slow
    things down even more.
