Basic infantry 101 you never shoot (or look) over anything you can shoot (or look) around. You really try to avoid shooting from any one spot more than a couple of times, after the third time you are likely toast.
I had a buddy get shot pretty much the same way, Lieutenant (West Point, SF). He jumped up, held up his arm, motioned forward with the palm of his hand, yelled follow me and took one to the forehead. The only two thoughts I've ever had a bout the incident were sorrow (he was one of the good ones) and WTH did they tech you in training?
