Archey 3d shoots

3D season is coming up fast. Any of you who live in or close to PA do any 3d shooting? Me and the boy do quite a bit of traveling around the state for weekend shoots and I was wondering if any of you do the same and maybe hook up and do some shoots as a group. Also do you know of any real challenging shoots, the local ones here do tend to get boring with all of the easy 10-30 yd flat ground shooting. I like the kind where you need to look real close and plan a shot, not just walk up to a marker and shoot. I also like the ones that has some good walking distance involved to make the shoot last longer and so you are not shooting every 5 minutes.

Archery shoots that use lifelike sized targets made of a heavy rubber type foam. Most set them up in the woods and you have to use trails to access the targets. The targets have score rings on them and it is up to you to score your self. It is challenging and great practice in real life style. Beats the crap out of shooting paper and there is no compitition pressure at most shoots so a family can get some excersize walking the trails and some practice shooting the bows.

There are a couple of places near where I live that due 3d shots periodically. One of the shoots is at my rifle range, and they have forty or so targets that you can shoot at. They are a blast, and though I keep a personal "score", I generally do not shoot at all of the designated distances. Since I will never shoot at a deer with a bow above forty yards, my shots on the course are below forty. Funny, at the end of one course they had a 3d elk 85 yards away. The guy explained to me that an x ring is 10, in the vital section is 8, and anywhere else on the body is five. I never shot at any target that far, and had no idea how to aim, being that I have only one pin. I put the pin about two feet above the deers spine, above the vitals, and shot. Walked over, and I hit the deer in its foot. I asked the fellow if that counts for five, and he said it sure does. They are alot of fun, and are great practice.

I shoot 3d the same way I hunt. I carry a bushnell yardage pro at all times whether bow hunting or rifle and I take it 3d shooting. When hunting I keep all shots under 30 yards and position myself in such a way that all I can shoot is 30. Some of the guys get mad when the see me "dotting" the targets but ohh well. I hate guessing yardage because that is how deer are wounded and lost. I don't know how many times I have heard people say,"it didn't look that far" and I just want to smack them upside the head. But I love the practice and it is a great way to spend time with the rugrats in a productive manner! I love watching my kids shoot and it sometimes gets real entertaining, and sometimes expensive when the goof.

Yep they are fun I used to shoot them. We have on range that has a very rugged hilly course with a lot of timber. They always had one 80 yard shot set up someplace just for fun. Everyone would always throw their scab arrows at it.Me and my dad put an extra pin on our bows and tuned that pin for 80 yards. We both put our arrows next to each other just outside the kill zone.Everyone there about crapped their pants lol

Shennecoy Sportsmans Club has quite a few shoots every year. Last year they held one in April and it snowed! That realy made the shoot fun. I never knew how bad things change in the peep under those conditions. They are supposed to have a money shot this year which rumor has it it will be around 100 yds, one shot at $5. Closest to the bull gets the cash. A couple of others have done that and the yardage is a mystery and them SOB's won't let me "dot" it!

7mm nut- Here is a great way to help youir hunbting success with out having to use your rangefinders all of the time. Take some of those flags, you know the ones that the electrical crews use to mark their lines, and place them around your stand at various ranges. This way when you are setting therer and tyhe brute walks along, you do not need to take time to distance the animal. I use red, orange and yellow flags. One flag for each pin.songdog
