Are you sure about that ford being in the list? I wouldn't buy one, much less steal one ... just not worth it

I agree with the list. I had a 1990 Honda Accord that got stolen in front of my home in D.C.The b@sta@rds didn't know how to drive stick shift and only managed to get a block down the street before abandoning it on my neighbors driveway.

I think that the best way to prevent car theft is to drive an old piece of crap.Mine has never been stolen...heck,I even leave the keys in it hoping they will!

I just don't understand. Most of the autos on the list are about ten years old. Heck you could buy these vehicles in good shape for under $2500.00. I am no thief, but if I took a car it would be newer than 1990. These car are so old that I can't see how parts demand would be very much, at least what is not worn out on them.

Twenty of the twenty-five are Japanese cars, many of them 12 - 15 years old. I don't think it has anything to do with value or ease of fencing the hot parts. I think they must be easier to steal. Maybe the cheesy ignition/steering column locks pop out with minimal exertion. After all, a crack-smoking, gangbanger car thief isn't interested in busting his * to steal a car. It's gotta be eeeeasy.

I think that what they are stealing is reliability.

Right. A 1987 Toyota with 200,000 miles on it? Not my definition of reliability. Besides, how would the thieves know what's reliable and what's not? I doubt very many of the crips or bloods subscribe to Consumer Reports magazine.

From personal experience and reading reports, most Jap cars are very reliable, 200k or not. I personally drive a Dodge Grand Caravan and well, it sucks. Could be I just bought a lemon, either way, it sucks.

While working Corrections - had an inmate that stole only Toyotas. Simple - they had only 9 master keys in the 80's. Don't know if they have changed much since.

You are right Blutic. The reason they steal the jap cars is because its easier. cheap ignition systems. As far as the quality aspect. They could care less. If they did you would have seen Cadillac, Lincoln, Mercedes,Lexus,Saturn,Infinity, and Buick on the list.

I remenber the good old days when the Corvette was at the top of the most stolen list. At least back then the crooks had a sense of value and style.

as far as the ford goes...just a redneck case of mistaken Identity...oops, I thought I parked this thing a little farther away from the bar...must have moved it when I came out to take a leek last....

The reason why the Honda civic , and the accord are so high on the list, is because they are the easiest cars on the market too steal.... Even a bad theif could roll that car in under a minute... Reason being. Poor placement of Ignition wires. All hondas as of current, place there intire electrical relay system in a kickpanel on the drivers side. Elapsed time.. broken window 2 sec. open door 2 sec.. pop kickpannel 10 sec.. find ground and ignition wire ( clearly labeled) 15 sec... replacing the dancing hoola girl you got in hawaii ....priceless
lets all be responsible! shoot a criminal!

Where I live they don't steal much of anything except SUV's and peek-ups.

dodge, plymouth, and chrysler vehicles have a flaw that make them easy to steal.[This message has been edited by 1blitzer (edited 03-19-2002).]
