I'd pack it and feel OK. A 1926 3rd Model 44 Special shipped to Texas in 1929. Wouldn't be surprised if some lawdog carried it. These nickel plated 44s were popular in Texas and Arkansas.
This one would also do. S&W "Heavy Duty" 38 Special shipped in 1960. Another Texas gun and another I suspect rode in a cop's holster. These were being cleared out by this time as the M19 Combat Magnum made them obsolete. I could see a young officer counting his pennies buying this on sale. He was well armed. That 38/44 round pushing a 158 SWC at 1,140 FPS would ruin anyone's day.
