With bulged barrel. I can buy this gun, maybe cheap. Would it be worthwhile to buy it and re-barrel?
Gun is in very good shape otherwise.
Guestimates on how much a smith would charge for labor?

    Those are good guns.

The auction side has a 4" barrel for sale starting at $115:

I think a Gun Smith would charge maybe $75-100 to put it on.

I had a S&W K38 crack the forcing cone. Bought a new barrel and had a smith install it. Ran me $150 total for parts & labor (bought the barrel on GB). If you can get the gun for under $400 I would do it.

Would what caused the barrel to be messed up hurt anything else in the gun? I would be concerned about that.

It seems very tight, lock up is good and trigger is crisp. Cylinder is excellent from the naked eye. Finish is very good.

There are 2 on fleabay both 6" for $119 and $150. Figure in the C-note to the Smith to put it on and you are into it for say $250.

On the auction side they are going for between $600-$800.

I agree if you can get it for under $400 and the rest of the gun is undamaged, I would go for it.

Are there any decent gunsmiths out in Giles or B'burg? If not might check with T&J Tactical in Radford, he mills his own suppressors and other class III stuff so he might do the work.

I asked around a couple years ago and the best I got was $150 for a barrel swap. Make sure you know what the cost will really be. I would want the total for gun+parts+labor to be no more than $500 as I think that's the value on a rebuilt 586. If it is more, I would just buy a decent gun. A rebuilt gun is worth far less, so I would have to get it REAL cheap to make it worth my effort.

PS: I did this about 10 years ago with an old 4" M&P I got from a pawn shop for $60 because the barrel was bulged. Bought a 5" barrel off ebay for $5 and swapped it myself. I wouldn't try it with an expensive gun. I figured I had little to lose with this one if I bungled it. Turned out OK.
