I ran across a Ruger no.1, chambered in 45-70. It has a very thick bull type barrel on it which measures 27 inches from tip to frame. Also has a set of Williams flip up peep sight, which are mounted on the tang. Has a older scope on it. I really like it and its in pretty nice shape. Question are did they actually put that long a barrel on the No.1's? Would this be a good deer caliber? I was also thinking down the road using it on an elk hunt one day.Your comments would be appreciated on the rifle and this caliber.. Thanks

That rifle has been chambered in many calibers. My most recent purchase was one in 357 mag. That is one of the rarest chambering. The guy wanted $800 with Williams peep sites, the original factory sites and original box. I would have paid 3 times that price for that caliber.
45-70 will take any game except Elephants if loaded properly. I have actually read an article where the author used a 45-70 to kill an Elephant. Thats pushing it a little I think but any North American game will drop to the 45-70. It would bowl over a deer or an elk. Great bear and Moose caliber too.
With practice you can learn to reload as fast as one can with a bolt gun.
Do you happen to have any pictures or do you know what it says on the barrel?

I love the 45-70 as long as your not hunting the bean fields. that big ole bullet drops them in their tracks. Plus that Ruger will handle the hotter loads
That is my favorite part about them. I am not daring you to push it's limits, but man will they hold their own. [:)]

I think the #1 is the most beautiful mass produced rifle. I have several including one in 458 WM that I load to 45/70 levels. Be aware that the #1 kicks like a Missouri mule. The friend who sold me the 458 had shot it with full loads and he assured me the recoil was worse than my 460 which he had also tried.
