saga of the GM radio woes continues........

posted here about a year ago about how the radio in my 05 Buick started making the electronics go nuts in the car and had a new refurbed unit put in at the dealership to the tune of $600+.

well about 4 months ago it started cutting out again (no electronic problems) like you were going out of range or going under some heavy duty power lines. so I take it back in 4 weeks ago and yep - radio causing problems. But not to worry, it's still under warranty so they put in another factory refurb unit.

within 2 weeks it's doing it again. got 3 days left on warranty and fired off a email to the service manager last night. waiting on reply.
will be taking it in tomorrow regardless of a response or not.

I think at this point there's no need to try a 3rd unit. I want to go to best buy and have them install a nicer unit with GPS and a back up cam. got a quote last year of $1200 for that. I figure if I go that route I can get the extended warranty in case it messes up.

but I think there's more to it than the radio. wouldn't there be a problem in the computer for all this to happen? the first time they said it was trying to communicate with the radio but the radio wasn't replying back. must be female???[:p][:D]

what would you expect from a dealership at this point? do I need to get out the Vaseline. should I expect a refund? all or part? I mean $600 is a lot to fork out for any car stereo installed. ($300 for it, 300 for labor)

I know I can't keep up with Kasey's drama but I do what I can.

I would think it is something else to be messing up that many times.

Is the radio hooked to the computer?

As far as getting a new radio I am not sure I would go that route until you figure out what is wrong. Maybe they need to put a new one in instead of rebuilt.

If you read through your warranty, I'm sure it will say something to the effect "Repair or replace at our discretion". I doubt it will say anything about a refund. For a refund, you would need to take them to court, and prove they did not cure the issue in a reasonable time.

As others have said, it seems there likely there is other issues than just the radio. Personally though, I think having Best Buy install a stereo is asking for more trouble. I have seen the work these hacks at stereo/audio install places do, and it is appalling. I wouldn't let one of those clowns wire up fog lights on my worst enemy's lawnmower.

Find out what they want to do without making demands. If you want to upgrade to a better stereo they will probably just charge you the difference in the unit and install it free.

Go to a REAL stereo shop to have something install, NOT BEST BUY! Best Buy hires people off the street with no training. Trust me on this, they screwed up our mustang, and I had to raise holy hell to get them to fix it!

Also, $1200? You are getting reamed. You can buy a SUPER nice stereo for $300 these days. Installation should be $100 or less. That leaves $800 for the other stuff, which is still a ton of money. Electronics are CHEAP these days.

He said he wants a unit that also has GPS, and a back-up cam. Can you get all that in a quality product for 300 bucks?

    Absolutely!

    Wired camera $15.00
    7" monitor $35.00
Separate GPS with lifetime maps $150.00

Yes, easily under $300, and stupid high quality for under $500. $200 to install AT THE MOST! (At a quality shop, not Best Buy!)

People still listen to the "radio part" of the vehicle's "sound system"???

Also they make adapters that go from your wiring harness to the radio. There is no splicing anymore.

Also my wifes mustang has rear end problems. She got lucky her mechanic told her to take it to the dealer. They have rebuilt the rear end 8 times so far. Each time they fix it the warranty starts over.

so they call and after 2 radios they said it was the antenna module.

so the stereo I paid 600 for installed was unnecessary? now they want 300 for the module installed.

I really think they should eat everything but the coat of the part since they miss-diagnosed it in the first place.

what are my chances on that happening?

"what are my chances on that happening?"
Unless the dealership has high expectations of you buying another vehicle soon, I'd say ZERO.
I bought a used pickup last summer. Salesman was pretty hardline on the price until I told him how much I drive and that the old pickup would last me less than 2 years at which time I'd be looking for a replacement. 15% off plus $500 in maintenance and upgrades on the pickup and a handshake that I'd come there first when time to buy again.

I was just about to say solve the problem by checking the ant connection at the back of the radio, or at the ant. Also, make sure mounting screws are tight as they are also part of the ground.

But, seems like you got that figured out now.

Rock Auto has them for 47 bucks. I would replace it myself.

$300.00 install. The radios are plug and play. They most likely had to code the replacement to the car. You are getting reamed get the district managers number and call him. It is there bad diagnosis that caused the original radio replaced. Crutchfield has any radio you want with plug and play harnesses you can install yourself, for really decent prices.

For $1200 you could mount an iPad mini in the dash.
