help me name my cat

buschmasterbuschmaster Member Posts: 14,229 ✭✭✭
edited January 2017 in General Discussion
after spending years and years with my dogs, I thought about getting a cat. for 1 second. nope, too weird.

well I didn't go get a cat, I ran across one. heard meowing under a piece of cardboard in the rain. looked underneath, there was a kitty cat. so I grabbed it and took it home.

must have been a few weeks old. fit in the palm of my hand. I was surprised that it could eat solid food. gave it ham and tuna. it really liked that. must have grown up feral, because it would take food and snarl at me. attack my hand and draw blood if I didn't get it away fast enough.

here is a video of feeding time.

http://tinypic.com/r/zjaqsy/9

I thought I might call it Snowball. it was the size and shape of a dirty snowball. very soft and fluffy.

lkoQ4v2.jpg

couldn't tell if it was a boy kitty or a girl kitty, didn't want to get out the tweezers and magnifying glass so I forgot about it. it's a kitty. named Snowball.

that was a month or two ago. getting bigger, and I guess it's a girl kitty. but she has a little goatee beard. maybe she's a lesbian.

atok22Z.jpg

I always thought cats go "meow". she only meows once a week. the rest of the time she chirps, warbles, trills, and whatthehell??? I had no idea cats made these noises.

the bigger she gets, the more active she is. she runs and jumps all over the place, climbs up everything. chases anything that moves. she's a zany little bugger.

if I'm holding a piece of food, she will climb right up my leg and climb out on my arm to get it. in fact if I'm holding anything, she will climb up my leg and halfway up my shirt to see what it is. and it hurts. I have claw marks all over my legs and stomach from her claws going through my jeans and shirt.

when I come home, she's waiting at the door for me... and climbs up my leg to greet me. her latest thing is to climb up about waist high, then go in circles around my waist before jumping off. ??? bizarre

any time I'm laying in bed she has to sit on me somewhere. on my legs, on my stomach, on my back, on top of my head. when I'm watching videos on the computer she has to sit on my shoulder so she can watch too, like that laser thing on the shoulder of The Predator. if that thing had a name I might call her that, but I don't know what it's called so whatever.

2 weeks ago she figured out how to purr. when I'm going to sleep she sits on my stomach and purrs LOUD so she can irradiate me with her Kitty Goodness.

she wakes me up at 4 AM when she reaches under the pillow to snag my fingers so she can start chewing on them. if she wants me to get up, she'll tag me on the ear or the eyebrow with that 1 claw on the end of her toe. knows just how far her reach is and what she can do with it. when I finally get out of bed she goes for the feet. I have to put on my pants/socks/shoes as quickly as possible because cat teeth/claws frikkin' hurt on bare feet and I can't get her to stop.

with those claws, and the black mask, and the goatee, I was thinking about naming her Zorro. but it's a girl cat. Zorra? or name her Zorro anyways? after all, she might be a lesbian.

that's what she looks like and how she acts. what should I name her?

    Bait.

like I'm going to call my cat "bait".

You can call a cat whatever you like, it still won't come.

I dunno, this cat follows me all over the place. she might. and we talk to each other. when I'm taking a bath she gets freaked out (like my dogs did) thinking I'm going to drown, so she looks in the tub and the conversation goes like this:

    "warble warble squirk chirp"
    "what? I'm taking a bath"
    "squawk twitter chirp"
    "nice hot water, feels good"
    "warble chirp sqwarkle"
"do you want in the water?"
    "chirp"
    "well you can't come in"
    ...

congrats on the new pet cats own us just ask them might as well call her queen that's what she will think she is

ah, gotta think of a name.

I was never a cat fan but we have around a dozen with a new one coming up at night eating

I never was a cat fan either. I would have called them all "cat"

    mrs.perfect

I like stroking the *, do you think mr. perfect would mind?

    CAT.

well, "kitty" would be more like it, but that's too un-original. if I'm going to call it anything it has to be some sort of a name.

    Oreo!

not bad. tried it, she looks at me like "wha?"

OK, just to set the record straight.
You do not have a cat.
    The cat has a person.
They know who is in charge and you can't change their mind.
My wife brought a small kitten to me with eye infections.
I cleaned and doctored her eyes and then discovered a piece of cheat grass in one.
Got that out and she recover completely.
With vet bills for her other problems I now have $800 invested in her.
I could have bought a beef calf cheaper.

Good for you rescuing a stray.
    I'm a sucker for animals.
I even leave out food for the more undesirable species.

I have a little (14 lb) grey Tom who, at the moment, is sleeping with his chin on top of my foot. He is my apprentice lion. Rarely meows, but talks up a storm. If I walk to the door and whistle, he comes running. And yeah, he WILL hop into the shower- loves water. Tries to bat water with a paw.

As far as a name for your Queen (and yes, that is what girl cats are called) How about Lucy? And you will note that she has fur. So Lucy Fur.

get some clippers and start trimming her claws. trust me on this.
if you do one a day (front and back) you will get her used to it enough to tolerate it. then after a month or so you can just do them all at once ever 2 weeks.

it will save your furniture and your leg.

also put up several scratching posts around near your couch and she will claw at those instead of your furniture. I picked up 2-3 on C-list and yard sales for $3-5 each.

if you get a cat tree/condo the same way you can train her to come to it if you put a bell on top and ring it and give her a treat when she comes to the sound.

our cat will go to her room when you tell her, come to the bell and sometimes she will go to it and ring it for a treat.

to get her to go to her room on command it was all about repetition - I would tell her to come on let's go to your room (spare BR) and she would follow me as I had a treat in hand and as we went I said go to your room over and over. w/in a week I had her going on command.

one thing - NEVER free feed a cat. I feed her several times a day - no set times. that way she never went hungry but was always hungry enough to want to learn.

Gotta name it something pertaining to those markings.

ah, the lions in Ghost and the Darkness. I liked that movie. Michael Douglas' unshaven scraggly character reminded me of one of my best friends. oblique reference though. and the kitty doesn't look much like a lion.

Zorro is great! The cat doesn't really care!

    we'll see. she might. because...

she sort of acts like a dog. I have had her since she was a kitten (maybe 2 months now) and I have spent almost 20 years as the alpha dog to 2 rottweilers and a wolf dog. I'm in charge, that's just the way it is. she follows me around and we do everything together, and she seems to be socializing like a dog. whenever I do something, she thinks she has to be doing it too. (like eating, or pawing around in stuff, or watching the computer) she doesn't think she owns me... yet. we'll see how it goes.

like most women do men just stringing you along making you feel in charge until she feels like you will not dump her [:D][:D]

congrats although I was never a cat fan a few of ours have warmed up to me and have changed my mind . but we still have 5 dogs that take up most of my time , and they do not like the cats invading there space . they will not hurt the cats but escort them to the cat safe zone when needed [:D][:D][:D]

Bandit is as good a name as any and it seems to fit. She stole your heart.

I wouldn't count on her being a lesbian. If you don't want a house full of cats get her spayed.

dunno about Lucy. might try Queenie. will see if she responds to that.

yep, she eats whenever I eat... and that is "whenever" [:)] if I got enough ham she'll do anything

    doesn't really match the personality.

I like Zorro, but I suppose Bandit is a better name for a girl cat.

    Bizarro

The cat we have, I named Lovey.
The wife tried going with something else... But Lovey stuck.

The day my wife brought her home, she (the cat) took over.
She follows me around the house more than either of the dogs.
And yes... If you're laying down or sitting down, she's sitting on you.

Think my Cats name is safe here. "Stinky Tinky" As a kitten he could peel paint off the walls. But that is what happens when you have a Parasite in your testicles.

So after that was fixed I tried to change his name. He was real proud of his collar with a bell on it. So proud that if it came off while fighting with his sisters he would carry it to me to put it back on.

So I tried to get the Vet to change it to Tinky and all they did was add Tinky after stinky. and his name stuck.

She reminds me of "All mimsy were ye borogoves" from Jabberwocky. I would name her Mimsy.

Get ye a can of compressed air and when she starts to climb you, the curtains the kitchen table... Well you get it, a very small puff of compressed air in her general direction (not in the face or ears), will get her headed elsewhere. A very gentle way to suggest that some places are off limits. Quickly you will only need to pick up the can.

Or how about Elana? Zorro's wife's name in the recent movie.

My late uncle was a cat guy. He had a mitten toed cat that looked just like yours.

Her name was "Josey" after that all girl cartoon rock band Josey & The * Cats.

I like that name as it also fits one of my fictional hero's, Josey Wales. Ya he was a he but also an outlaw!

The thing about pet names is that they need to be simple one syllable that roll easily off your tongue. Try them out when you change your tone of voice from soft to harsh.

It's fighting because you aren't "feeding" it, you're teasing it.

Training an animal to fight food away from you is never going to make that animal the pet that you want.
