I got sprayed with pepper spray... ouch.

Yup, yesterday was qualification with pepper spray, and everyone in the class had to get a dose. I think I would have prefered getting shot myself, probably wouldn't have hurt as bad. We got hit with Phase 4 brand pepper spray, unlike regular OC made with Jalapeno peppers this stuff is made with Habinaro peppers which are supposed to be the hottest ones there are.

Well I don't know, but I remember seeing what looked like a big wad of chewing tabaco spit comming right at me, feeling it hit my eyes and then I hit the ground. I cried to my mommy, prayed to jesus, talked in tongues, cursed words I didn't even know I new and then some. This is the first time I've ever felt anything like this before. After about thirty minutes I was walking around again, and another thirty minutes I had my eyes open. Today in class we all made fun of eachother's screaming.

One guy walked around for about 10 seconds saying, "Thats it, that doesn't hurt that bad, that ain't nothin..." and then it kicked in. And he went down like the rest of us.

I think the worst part was when I got home. Apparently water reactivates the stuff, so when you get in the shower, you get a second dose. Ouch...

This morning I woke up and it felt like my skin was sun burned, though there is no physical tan, just nerves.

Anyway, as to compare the pain, the only thing I can think of is pooring gasoline all over your head and then lighting it on fire. Not being able to breath, hyperventalating. And letting it burn for at least a good 20 minutes.

It was an experience that I'm glad I had, though I never want to have it again. It gives me confidence in my equiptment. Knowing that it is an effective tool, and how it works, phase 4 pepper spray is some good stuff. I feel sorry for the first poor * I get to use this stuff on, getting handcuffed and thrown in the back seat. We had water on sight and soap to wash the stuff off right after we got hit. The criminal in the back of my patrol car won't.

I advise that if anyone civilian or not, carries pepper spray, that they should themselves be hit with it, so to understand the effects. It causes no physical harm, its really just a food product, but boy does that sh*t burn...

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

    WooooooooooooooooooooHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I know whatcha mean- I qualified a few months ago with some regular 'ole OC spray and thought that was MORE than enough to take the fire outta most anyone. THEN a partner at work got a-hold a can of some of that high powered stuff- about a week later he got his chance to use it on a very unstable subject in an enclosed area, WOW! That spray really did the job! On the subject, and, well, on us. Seems that the can was the "fog" varient and not the "stream". Basically he gassed out the entire area, to include the two guys in the hallway (behind us) about 10 feet.

    Coff, Coff- I'll live
maybe,,,,,,but he's gonna die for sure.

leeblackman, this may go without saying, but a normal guy being sprayed and a guy being sprayed that is "cranked up" are two different things.
I'd crash and burn just like you,but the guy on crystal meth may say
    "Hey dude,let's party!"

Im glad it just happens once a year because it kills me.I am also an instructor seems as if Im sprayed all day if I teach a class. But I have used and seen it used with no affect on certain subjects, some of them it made fight worse. But the good thing about pepper spray is it doesnt disapate when you have the sucpect in your car hauling him to jail and it choke you to death like Mace used to.

    Best.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

It takes about 5 seconds for the carrier to evaporate and then the eyes clamp shut for an hour. I figure if I get sprayed, I have 5 seconds to locate my assailant and kill him.

It sucks bad doesn't it. Ill never forget basic training when they marched us twelve at a time into a storage shed with our gas masks on our hips and our steel pots in our hands. Rounded us all up around a 50 gallon drum and through in a match, gas starst pooring out people taking deep breaths of fresh air before the room fills with gas drill sergeants standing around us laughing as grown men reverted to childish actions. Running in place, crying, snot running literally like a faucet from noses, cursing, praying trying to escape the shed. I was one of the few people who were lucky enouph to stay calm continue taking slow and shallow breaths and hold still. The more you moved around the worse it got. It sucked at the time but in hindsight it was pretty funny. They even had a photographer outside getting pics of us as we walked out. The people who tried to run out or escape had to go twice, poor suckers. lol...

We had a county Mounty up here that used to get his jollies using that stuff on people he had in cuffs, than getting his partner to sign the report as to how the "prisioner" had been resisting arrest. Finaly his partner (under pressure from 1/2 dozen defence lawyers) recanted his story, reveiling how all the guys "resisting arrest" reports were false.
End of story, he shot himself when the state boys showed up to arrest him.

    Now THAT'S crazy!

I caught a show awhile back and they had this guy who was a human ghinie pig for police products. What an idiot, spends his days getting pepper sprayed, zapped by stun guns, shot with stink bullets that smell so bad they make you vomit uncontrolably and a multitude of others. They even had somekind of light that messed up his brain functions and caused him to collapse. They have some wild stuff. Speaking of which, did any of you catch the highway patrol incident last week in cali where the swat team approached the vehicle busted the window and filled it with foam with the driver and passenger still inside? What a riot...

The agency that I worked for used Freeze +P. Its OC (pepper spray) combined with OS (anyone who's been to boot camp, that's what is in the gas chamber). The OS seems to open up your pores really well for the OC to get in there real good. It locked me down for a good 45 minutes to an hour every year for qualification.

I dont care what someones high on, if that stuff is made from real habenaro peppers, they will stop whatever they are doing, grab their face and fall to their knees. I once cut up habenaro peppers and washed my hands thoroughly several time. Thinking I was pepper free I then went to the rest room, Woooohooo was I ever surprised. That stuff is potent. I read a story that said Indians used to eat them raw to induce halucinations and I believe it. Put it someones eyes and Id give them a 50% chance of permanently dammaging their eyes.

I made a mistake up there in my last post. The tear gas (that military recruits get in basic) is CS not OS. Sorry for the brain fart.

I ran the gas chamber for my Army reserve unit years ago. Wild things happen....

Me and my LT bars standing at back door of chamber, in mask. I was 5'10" and a solid 230lbs. Trainee, 5', 100lbs max, who had heard my safety lecture 15 minutes earlier about WALKING out door flapping arms like bird comes flying out and runs directly into me.

Eyes the size of saucers. He'd only been in the army long enough to know that Drill SGTs were like gods and LTs told the DS what to do, and he had not only run into one but the one who had told him to walk....

Then there were the five (count them --5 ) troops who decided to pile into a VW Beetle and beat everyone to the mess hall. 50 yards down road Beetle was driving itself as troops unloaded in record time.

My new wife gave me a hug first time I came home from gassing.

Next time there was clean clothing on the steps.

    Ah the good old days....

Back in the day...I had a combative drunk one night, all he wanted to do was fight, after a quick two second burst he was calling me sir and changing his ways. That oc messed him up so bad he ended up crapping in his pants while still in my patrol car.

leeblackman, I guess they didn't tell you what they told us when we qualified with OC...to make sure for a week or so that when showering, you don't let the water from from your hair into your face. Apparently, the residue can stick with you for quite awhile.

The other part is, when showering, LEAN FORWARD. The residue can run down to...well...VERY sensitive parts.

Wow, something hotter than phase 4? Where can I buy some?

Its funny how criminals who've been sprayed, as soon as you even just display the can, they automatically become very compliant.

Who says there's no real damage done by this stuff? As sensitive as a person's eyes are, how do you know there's no long-range effect? Agent Orange and Thalidamide were supposed to be harmless too.

Don't believe I'd just stand there and let anyone spray me with this stuff.

For the ex-military types thinking OC is like tear gas, no way. I went through Uncle's gas tents too and this stuff makes CS feel like walking in the room after your wife has used her hairspray. More than once I've seen grown men stick their face in a toilet for relief from this stuff. In jailhouse lingo it's known as "* Right", because
it'll make your attitude get right in a hurry.

I've seen lots of less than lethal gadgets come out and most aren't worth the extra weight to carry. IMHO, OC is one of the most effective tools since the hickory nightstick. It's only effective about 85% of the time, but that means I only have to fight 15% as many idiots.

As for civilian use, especially women who are uncomfortable with packing a gun, I'm a big proponent of them carrying this stuff. If they know it's not lethal they're more apt to use it when it's needed. How often have you heard of someone pulling a gun and threatening with it, then end up getting it taken away from them because they hesitated? Most don't want to take a life, but as many of us guys are aware-women will cause great pain in the drop of a hat if you *!ss 'em off.

A word of warning-If you get it on your hands you'd better wash them WELL. We had an officer get some on his fingers and fail to wash thoroughly enough. A few hours later he went home and his wife was feeling a little frisky. To make a long story short, he got cut off for about 2 weeks.
