Never pull a BB gun on someone who has a real gun...

The gene pool just got a little cleaner. Take a look at the pic, he doesn't look like the sharpest pencil in the box.

To teachers and school administrators who remember him from his days at Marlborough High School, Mark Stetson was a well-liked, if occasionally boisterous, kid and a standout three-sport athlete.

Police in New Haven, Conn., however, have painted a very different picture.

Officials say the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Stetson Monday afternoon became embroiled in a heated debate with a man at a small strip mall near the campus of Southern Connecticut State University.

Stetson, who witnesses say was holding a Bible over his head, and the man argued for several minutes, then things turned violent. It is believed Stetson may have pulled a pellet gun on the other man, who shot the 24-year-old in the chest, killing him.

Exactly what happened, though, remains unclear, a spokesperson for the New Haven Police said yesterday.

"It's kind of unclear right now who pulled what," said Bonnie Winchester. "Since Mr. Stetson was the one who had the bullet hole in his chest, there's an assumption he's the one who pulled the BB gun."

There seems little doubt, she added, that the second man thought he was protecting himself when he fired.

"It looks just like a handgun," she said. "I'm sure whoever had that BB gun, the person who didn't have it saw it and thought it was a real weapon."

Those who knew Stetson, however, said yesterday they found it difficult to grasp how the handsome teen had been transformed into a fiercely religious man who may have turned violent.

"He was a talented athlete," former Marlborough High School Assistant Principal Ed Clancy said yesterday. "It's very disappointing his life ended that way."

Although Stetson did have his run-ins with the legal system -- he was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon at age 17 -- Clancy and other school officials yesterday said his death came as a surprise.

"Let's put it this way: He was boisterous," Clancy said. "My question is what was he doing with a replica gun? Why would he have something like that?"
