    Bonnie Blue Flag by Harry McCarthy

    We are a band of brothers,
    Native to the soil
    Fighting for the property
    We gained by honest toil.
    And when our rights were threatened,
    The cry rose near and far;
    Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
    That bears a single star!

    chorus:
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    For Southern rights, Hurrah!
    Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
    That bears a single star!

    As long as the Union
    Was faithful to her trust,
    Like friends and brethren,
    kind were we, and just;
    But now, when Northern treachery
    Attempts our rights to mar,
    We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue flag
    That bears a single star.

    First gallant South Carolina
    Nobly made the stand,
    Then came Alabama
    And took her by the hand;
    Next, quickly, Mississippi,
    Georgia, and Florida,
    All raised on high the Bonnie Blue flag
    That bears a single star.

    Ye men of valor gather round
    The banner of the right,
    Texas and fair Louisiana
    Join us in the fight;
    Davis, our loved President,
    And Stephens statesmen are;
    Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag
    That bears a single star.

    And here's to brave Virginia,
    The Old Dominion State.
    With the young Confederacy
    At length has linked her fate.
    Impelled by her example,
    Now other States prepare
    To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue flag
    That bears a single star.

    Then here's to our Confederacy,
    Strong we are and brave,
    Like patriots of old we'll fight,
    Our heritage to save.
    And rather than submit to shame,
    To die we would prefer
    So cheer for the Bonnie Blue flag
    That bears a single star.

    Then cheer, boys, cheer,
    Raise a joyous shout
    For Arkansas and North Carolina
    Now have both gone out;
    And let another rousing cheer
    For Tennessee be given
    The single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag
    Has grown to be eleven!

    Is is for those of us who don't hawk Bill O'Reilly's book, "Killing Lincoln," or perpetuate his idea of Lincoln being the greatest president ever, but rather as the worst president ever due to his war and the murder of over 600,000 American citizens.

    To add to the post listing the KY CSA units, it is not a common known fact BUT during the early years of the war (and actually all through it but more covertly in the ending years) KY had 2 seats of state government. they had the Federal State seat at our present state Capitol, Frankfort, KY but also had a CSA state seat in Bowling Green , KY. Now Bowling Green was a very active CSA KY State seat till about 1862 late to mid 1863 then the Federal Government clamped down on southern sentiments but the people that were in power in Bowling Green and associated with the CSA mainly went under ground, or at least the ones that were not arrested and held in prison. One has to remember that Ole "Honest" Abe suspended the act Writ of Habeas Corpus (sp) thus he was supreme "dictator" as it were!!!!

    Maryland was a border state, and is was next to, or surrounded, Washington DC.

    Very early on the Maryland legislature was about to convene, it was well known that they were going to vote to secede.
    This would have put the US capitol in enemy hands!

    Lincoln sent in troops and arrested the legislature.

    There were 15 slave states in 1860.......plus Washington DC. Though slave trading was banned, slaveholding itself remained legal there until almost halfway through the war.

    Most today are under the impression that the 'slave states' within the US seceded, formed the Confederate States of America and fought a war against the Union which was made up of all it's 'free states'.

    In fact, only a percentage of our slaveholding states chose to secede. The rest remained within the Union and joined in fighting the CSA while continuing to allow slavery within their borders.

    Many are either ignorant of the facts or simply choose to ignore them, but with the exception of Washington DC's eventual ban and the Emancipation Proclamation which addressed only those former states which made up the CSA, no US laws banning slaveholding existed until after that war had ended.
